22 short?

I discovered that one of my older boxes of .22 ammo is .22 shorts. The fire out of my Taurus PT-22 but don't have enoough oomph to cycle the slide.

Are the good for anything other than a revolver, bolt or single shot gun? Is there anything specifically chambered for this round?

I have an old Remington Fieldmaster pump rifle that's chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle. Otherwise, I haven't seen anything chambered for it.

Just googled around. It was the original .22 cartridge and was still used in Olympic shooting prior to the air rifle due to its accuracy.

It seems for me, there is no use but single shot feeding in my Taurus.

I would give them to anyone close who has a gun chambered for them.

I also have an old Fieldmaster (1st gun!) that will use'em. I think any .22 that's not an auto-loader can fire them.

There used to be guns specifically chambered for short only, like the old "gallery guns" used at shooting galleries in the early and middle 1900's. Seems like you could still buy new 22 short only guns back in the 80's.

My Marlin 39 (lever-action) uses them just fine. I have a box or two myself. They are pretty quiet and still accurate. And the 39 holds 30 or so of them. it's DOUBLE illegal in California! (17 LR, ?L, and 32+ S!)

,22 Shorts are great for small game, especially squirrels - they don't over penetrate like LR's sometimes do.

Hey to you guys. Just a little comment from an old fart who is the FNG here.

Your info about pistols chambered for the 22 short round is accurate. There have been several auto loaders set up for the round, one of the more notable and well known was the High Standard Olympic Model from the early sixties. And as you would guess from the name, it was a competition quality gun for the period.

I have my father's Olympic, it was the first gun he allowed me to fire, and is still one of my most treasured guns. After countless rounds down the barrel by him in matches in the sixties and seventies, I acquired it after his passing and have continued to fire it.

It really generates a lot of " What's that? Some kind of toy pistol?" when I take it out. It produces a very distictive and puzzling little popping sound compared to current 22 l/lr production weapons.

But it's still a blast to spend time with and has the benefits of being a tack-driver and cheap to shoot.

I've got a Beretta Minx in the other room that was my grandmothers. little .22 short pocket gun. I've only had it about 2 weeks though, and haven't managed to find any .22 short yet to try it out.

Well if you find yourself heading toward Coffee County, give me a shout. It's a mostly full box of .22 short CCI hollow points. I read somewhere else tonight that the .22 short is an incredibly accurate round.

You can still buy them at a few places. CCI loads them.

Supposively they are supposed to be loadable in a Remington 541 magazine although I have never tried it.

Like couple of other posters here, I have old Remington Fieldmaster pump, which feeds .22 short, .22 long, and .22 long rifle fine, even intermixed.

About a year ago, I shot up about a hundred old .22 shorts in the Fieldmaster and H&R revolver; the carts were certainly no younger than than the 1960's. I don't recall any duds, but ironically, I certainly usually have one or two duds per hundred (or more) in current bulk load .22 LRs. Guess "they don't make 'em like they used to" applies.

I have a JC Higgins semi auto rifle that shoots them fine. It wont cycle with the CB shorts though. But cycles fine with std 22 short and LR.

I have to thank you for starting this thread because in jogged my memory about an old Springfield/Savage model 187M .22 semi-auto rifle I have in a case under my bed that I forgot about. It's designed to shoot .22LR and .22 shorts. The only thing with shooting shorts is that you have to push the bolt handle in to lock it and shoot them single shot only but you can have the tube magizine full. You just have to cycle them manually. I forgot about it because the inner mag tube was lost long ago but I remember that I found one online a while back but didn't buy it. I found it again and I will order it and put the rifle back in service.
