Gun Crimes in the U.K.

Recommended Posts

I was reading over at the Keep and bear arms forum, and got to thinking...if Guns are completely banned from that island, there should be none, correct?

well..

here are some statistics from 2007 (published quarterly)

Sadly, the risk of being a victim of crime (as measured by the British Crime Survey), is now 24%. This is an increase of one percentage point compared with the year to September 2005 (23%), but it is still considerably lower than the peak of 40%, recorded by the Survey in 1995.

Gun crimes weren't codified, but I have a feeling that these were murders.

In the year to September 2006, the provisional figure is 9,728 firearm offences, 14% fewer than the previous year.

Huh? someone help me out here...

They have firearm offenses in a Gun free zone??

they also have this to say about their figures..and they're relating to a 2005 study..

BCS interviews showed that there was no change in the overall measure of levels of perceived anti-social behaviour. However, individual strands showed some change. Worryingly, levels of worry about burglary, car crime, and violent crime have remained unchanged.

I couldn't find total crime statistics in the UK but I DID find some compelling reasons to carry a concealed weapon here in the U.S.

the last survey was apparently made in 2005 so these figures are 2 years out of date.

2005- Serious violent crimes committed in the USA 1,823,400

2005 arrests made - 603,500

It begs the question: Do you want to be a victim or a survivor?

These statistics were courtesy of the U.S. Dept of Justice

I think in the UK, the "ban" refers to handguns only. They have long guns over there -sporting clays and hunting are big. I imagine its harder to commit a crime with a long gun than with a pistol, but I'm betting that's part of the picture.

Murder rates in the UK are lower in general than in the US, but difficulty in obtaining appropriate firearms is not the whole issue. There are cultural issues to consider as well, although as the stats point out, things in the UK are changing. The days of the unarmed Bobby are all but over.

And of course a "gun ban" will never actually eliminate guns, it will just ban guns from the hands of those willing to follow the law.
