Any one seen this article?

Has anyone seen the article by Nate Rau in Today's (6/18/09) Nashville City Paper? It is obviously slanted and anti, but gives the impression that Tennessee is the only state witch will allow guns in establishments where alchohol is served. Among other states he writes that in TX, KY and GA carrying where alchohol is served is expressly forbidden. A law firm is sited as his source. Seems like to me that someone didn't bother to do any research at all. The stats cited are not in the web version of the paper, only the print edition.

Yes, I read it online. The article mentioned that David Randolph Smith (bio available below) did the research on state gun laws. Keep in mind that these "facts" are not being adequately explained. Yes, Georgia's statutes expressly forbid carrying a firearm to a "public gathering." The statute defines "public gathering" to include establishments at which alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises and which derive less than 50 percent of their total annual gross food and beverage sales from the sale of prepared meals or food." O.C.G.A. section 16-11-12(B).

The article, as well as most of the media coverage, has failed to distinguish the fact that Georgia's law isn't an "all or nothing" law when it comes to establishments that serve alcohol.

I intend to do some additional legal research on the various state laws, but it will take some time. But, this type of reporting is typical. Watching CNN (it's on at the firm all the time, so I didn't have a choice :D) today, I noticed they were still reporting the 90% of guns confiscated in Mexico myth. What can you do???;)

I'm with you - putting on my research hat (guess I'll replace the tinfoil one needed when reading the Tennessean, ha ha) and get "just the facts"...
