It's wearing a thong!

Oh I have to disagree. My Red Ryder came with one , and there is not a more manly gun evermade. Of course I lost control and ripped it off.

On a serious note, what is the actual purpose of the leather strapping and ring? Like I said there was one on my Red Ryder but I could not figure out what it was for.

Lost in the mists of time, but the most likely story was that the ring was for clipping the rifle to a cavalrymans' harness. The army didn't go for the 1892 in any big way, but for some reason the rings stuck around, with the idea that a cowboy would tie a lanyard to his saddle, avoiding loss if it bounced out of the scabbard.

These days, it is mostly for putting an annoying mar in the finish. Thus the leather thong, which serves no purpose except as a 'bumper' for the ring, to avoid dinging the receiver.
