Beale Street to Ban All Guns

I wonder if the business pays for paving of the streets?....if so maybe it is private.....but I bet public money goes to the upkeep of the street...which seems to me would make it public.

Even if it’s public I doubt it matters. As long as they check everyone. (DUI check points).

Many airports are owned by cities and are public; but you still are searched prior to entering the gates.

However…. I’m not an attorney and didn’t play one on TV. I just wondered if they had arrested or cited anyone for carrying there. So basically they are doing no more than a business that uses bouncers at the door… if you are carrying they just refuse you entry, if they find you carrying past the barricades they escort you out????

I'm banned from Beale Street. Yep, I banned myself. Besides, don't care about hanging out in "Gangsta's Paradise" anyway.

There has to be some special designation for the district as Beale does operate by a different set of rules in regards to liquor sales as well. The entire street is considered an open bar as there are open sales and consumption on the street. Also, sales continue past 3 am and some nights continue until 5 or 6 am.

A TGO member should open a nice restaurant on Beale which happens to have a back entrance as well.......

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to go there.

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to go there.

I can't imagine why anyone would live out in the suburbs either.

Are you from Memphis or Bartlett?

I live in Bartlett. What's wrong with the suburbs?

Or was I a tired, sleepy idiot and miss some sarcasm?

heck I can see where Beale Street could be a lot of fun. Key words here are "could be".

If I was thirty years younger I would be down with it. I ain't so old as to not remember loud music and drunken fun.

Shootings mar Independence Day weekend in Memphis

Five people became homicide victims on a particularly bloody Independence Day in Memphis, and several others were seriously wounded by gunfire.

The bloodletting continued early this morning, when at least eight people were wounded in two shootings, including five juveniles injured on Beale Street.

At 12:49 this morning, an unknown gunman opened fire on a large crowd outside the Plush Club at 380 Beale.

Three of the victims were taken to area hospitals, where one remained in critical condition late today. The other two suffered non-critical injuries, and one had been released from the hospital later today.

Two other victims, who appeared to have been hit by bullet fragments, were treated at the scene.

Witnesses told police that a large crowd had gathered outside the club, and that the suspect began shooting into the crowd.

Police could give no description of the shooter, nor a motive for the shooting.

The 380 Beale address, which has had several names, has been the scene of violence numerous times over the years.

Two men were shot to death outside the club in 1992 and a 16-year-old was killed inside the club in 1993. More recently, three people were injured inside the club during a shooting at a birthday party for local rapper Yo Gotti in 2006, and two University of Memphis basketball players were arrested after a melee in the Plush Club in 2007. The charges against the players were later dropped.

At 12:45 this morning, almost the same time as the shootings outside the Plush Club, police were called to the 600 block of Alston, near Crump and Mississippi, where three juveniles had been wounded in a drive-by shooting. All three were taken to area hospitals, and one remained in critical condition today. The other two were treated and released.

Witnesses told police that the youths were walking on Alston when at least two suspects drove past and began to shoot.

One suspect was believed to be driving a dark Buick; the second reportedly was on a motorcycle.

The shootings early today continued a violent Independence Day weekend, the deadliest in Memphis since six people were killed in homicides two weekends ago.

Five people were killed Saturday:

About 9:20 p.m., police responded to a shooting call on the 5000 block of Christopher Avenue, near Mendenhall and Cottonwood, where they found two gunshot victims, a father and his son.

James C. Balentine, 57, was pronounced dead of his wounds. James A. Balentine, 24, was in non-critical condition today.

Police said the two had gotten into an argument with the shooter, who has not been identified.

At 1:43 p.m., Memphis police were called to the 800 block of West Raines Road, near South Third, where they found a 43-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. Charlie Jones Jr. was rushed to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Police had no suspect information, and continued investigating today.

At 12:57 p.m., Memphis Police officers were at Saint Francis Hospital in East Memphis on an unrelated call when a seriously injured victim arrived at the emergency entrance in a private vehicle.

The victim, police said, may have been wounded earlier in the day on the 3400 block of Lichterman, near Winchester and Hickory Hill Extended. The victim was pronounced dead. Police did not give an age or gender for the victim.

Police were awaiting the results of an autopsy for an official cause of death, but were investigating it as a homicide. There were no suspects in custody.

At 2:37 a.m., police responded to a call about a shooting at 954 E. Holmes. They found a 17-year-old boy lying in the driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim had not been identified. Police had no suspects in custody.

At 1:30 a.m., police were called to a domestic shooting at Mosby near Alabama. There they found two women and a girl with gunshot wounds.

Kawanda Wainwright, 18, was taken to the Med, where she was pronounced dead. Two other female victims, 35 and 6 years old, suffered non-fatal injuries.

Police said today they have a possible suspect, but no charges had been filed.

Witnesses told police the victims got into an argument with a man who pulled out a pistol and began shooting.

I haven’t been there except to drive past. But if it is a controlled bar area where they check you for guns; why were juveniles allowed in?

It doesnt appear to me that their is any mention of legal permit holders doing any of these shootings, just an awful lot of minors involved in several instances,so my question would be,why does the media and politicians turn the problem onto the shoulders of us that are legal law abiding permit holders by banning our right to self defense when the illegals dont seem to give a rat about the laws, they all seem to have weapons though. As was slangily stated waasup wit dat.Homies gottem I aint.

exactly...chances are, they got there before they closed the street down before the security/cops and before the bouncers got there, or they knew someone that let them in...

Because if they crack down on the real problem, they will be labeled as racists, and that's unacceptable in the Obamination.

FYI: The "Plush Club" where the shootings on Beale took place is NOT in the closed off area. It's at 4th & Beale and has been a Club for thugs forever under many different names

Closed Beale is just across the street up to 2nd.

Yeah you don't want to go down to that area where the Plush Club is. Pretty rough area. Tourist folks probably aren't welcome...you may have your money, camera, and everything stolen. I wouldn't drive through that area without a shotgun at night. A snubbie just isn't enough gun on that side of Beale Street.
