Anyone hunting coyotes in SE TN

Ditto on the previous 4 posts. They are EXTREMELY wise and VERY cautious in their approach. Patience is a must but so is a tack driving rifle if you are going to engage them in any open terrain. I choose to hunt with a Model 700 chambered in .22-250. I reload my own ammo but there is some really good stuff on the market, such as the Federal Premium loaded with Nosler Ballistic Tips. Personally I prefer the 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip or the 50 grain Hornady V-Max. This combination is flat shooting out to 400 yards, low recoil and will drop a coyote (bobcat, groundhog, fox, etc.) in it's tracks!! And if you get the chance to hunt in the snow by all means do it then. Get you a pair of the disposable Tyvex painter's coveralls and wrap up your weapon with cloth medical tape. You will virtually disappear.

A friend and I are looking to start coyote hunting. We are in the Chattanooga area. Any tips, tricks , suggestions would be welcomed. Any suggstions on where to go. Thanks in advance for any replies!

If you are hunting tight cover take a shotgun with 2, BB, or T's.

Remote electronic calls are a good thing.

If you want to save all the pelts and get the best price, 17 Rem with 25gr Bergers or the 204. Little hole in, no hole out, lots of sloshing on the inside and no sewing.

Thought this was interesting...City Council basically gave the go ahead to shoot coyotes within the Chattanooga City limits.

Brought up another interesting point...it apparently, despite what I have seen in the city charter, legal to discharge a gun within city limits. I didn't know this and it seems nobody else did either.

I am sure that on "Opinion" article will pop up in the next day or do.

Hey, guys, you seem to be the ones to ask...

What about cougar?

There are no cougars in Tn. You are seeing/hearing a bobcat. At least that's TWRA's opinion even while looking at game cam pictures.

There WERE cougars in Tennessee. My father has seen and heard them in Wayne Co. back in the 40s and 50s. Easy to recognize, if you hear what sounds like a woman being hacked up roaring in the night air, that would be your 6 foot bobcat!

I took a pot shot at a bob a few years back with my bow while deer hunting. He had been trying to catch some turkey based on the cackle storm that went up down in the valley below my stand. He came skulking up the hill and right underneath me without ever knowing I was there. I drew and shot almost straight down. That sucker did a 6 foot bouncing backward launch, spun on his heels and ran 20 yards before stopping to look back at what had smacked the ground next to him. Missed him by that much.......anyway, he wandered off and I never found my arrow. Burrowed all the way in and disappeared. Pretty amazing to watch no matter.

I don't have any cougars. Just ask Fish and Game. Sue went out for firewood friday night, though, and a squirrel growled at her...

Nope, never been hunting, period.

I'd like to go sometime, but don't have any hunting rifles/shotguns, nor do I have any clue where to hunt.

This reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask.

I know you're required to take a Hunters Safety Course in order to go hunting. I took such a class in Illinois, but it was roughly 20 years ago, and I have no papers showing I took the course. Do you think there is any chance of getting the State of Illinois to send me some papers showing that I indeed took and passed the course, or would I have to take it again?

Depending on your age you may not need a hunter's safety class in Tn.

I'm 32

Yes, I was born after 1969, so I'm required to take one. This makes perfect sense, because anyone born before 1969 was automatically born with hunting know how.

Its worth a try! I took the TN Hunters Safety course back in the 70s and wanted to hunt at Ft. Gordon, GA when I was in the service. They mandated that you have taken a safety course as well. I called up TWRA and they sent me one gratis! Won't be nothing but an email or a call to try. If not, take the course, I went through it again when my son took his and its not bad.

my neighbor about 1/2 mi. away swears he saw a cougar in his back yard just before christmas this last year. i thought all bobcats had a stubby tail. this cat had a tail almost as long as its body and was as big as a fairly large dog.

People borne before 1969 had parents/grandparents that took them hunting from itty bitty and had them shooting from itty bitty. People got civilized and citiyfied around then.

And we lost some of our Freedom!

Having to send my kids to a govt run course to teach them something I had already done just P--SED me off!

How strange it was when my "Service Rifle Jr Expect/IDPA Marksman/Camp Perry Medal Winner" 15 year old son had to keep reminding the state govt instructor to keep his finger off the trigger while holding a weapon. :)

BACK On TOPIC......

I shoot the VC (Varmint Cong) Coyotes here in the Middle Tennessee area with an 24" Bull Barrel AR using Black Hills 223 Remington 60g Hornady V-Max. ;)

What are pelts worth now a days?

About $10 if they are well taken care of. Our winters don't produce good pelts.

Just watched channel 4 news, they had a story on about "urban" coyotes and that people should watch out. Said that seniors and people with infants should be especially careful. Am I missing something? Are coyotes attacking people now, I mean come on! More media sensationalism.

I work for a local municipality, and we have very frequent reports of coyotes watching young children in their back yards. My mayor has given me a year round pass on shooting them.
