Anybody into singing?

I went yesterday and sat in as a guest with the Appalachian Express Barbershop Chorus. I had thought about joining them about 11 or 12 years ago, but really didn't have the time to put into it. If anyone has ever heard them sing, they are an awesome group and really know how to make the music ring. I enjoyed the experience of singing with them last night, and plan on joining them after my third visit (that's the least amount of time you can attend before you join). If anyone else in the Tri-Cities area can sing (and likes Barbershop), they warmly welcome visitors to their chorus. Last year, in the district competition, they placed 18th. This year, they had an overall placement of 8th, and a singing placement of 5th! So, I am really excited about becoming a member, and would encourage anybody else to think about it too; if you like to sing. I GREATLY enjoy vocal music. I can even carry a tune. However, I have a defective instrument. I can't sing. My youngest daughter is a soprano and sang with the Tennessee Wesleyan choir. But I'm a dud.

Back in the 1970's in college in Cookeville, I was a member of the Brothers All barbershop quartet. One of the most fun things we did in college...well, besides alcohol, the occasional illicit substance, and sex (did I say that out loud?).

Barbershop harmony is hard to sing well, and sounds damn good when it is done well.

If you get the chance, join the group, you will enjoy it immensely.

While with Music City, a quartet was started with the intent of Valentine's Day-grams and we continued on for a while, until I moved. While with that quartet, we sang with Gaylord Entertainment for a traveling Time Life exhibit showcasing the Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post Magazine covers. We were the "live" Barbershop quartet demonstration. It was pretty darn cool.

Was this done as a hobby, or was it your "regular" job? I would love to get into something that pays at least what i make now, because I love singing, but I think it's probably too late in life to start a singing career now. Was Tony the director when you sang with them? I understand he's been with them a long time.

Tony Bowman was, singlehandedly, the very reason I first became interested in the barbershop style of singing. He is also an incredible person. I think VERY highly of him. He may not even know any of that. Suffice to say, he is a remarkable man and helped shape my vision for the man I strive to be. Yes, those are strong words and I mean them all.

Each member of the quartet had "real" jobs and were able to work the gig with a little time negotiation. I had a boss who liked me enough to allow me some leadway. I was very thankful for that. The other gentleman had the ability to set their own "real job" schedules. It worked out without too much interference, really. Weekends were where we accumulated the majority of our hours.
