My letter to the Wilson Post

The Wilson Post ran a story June 3 titled "Officials Oppose Gun Law" regarding the park carry bill, and published my letter in the June 5 edition. The original article is not on their website, but my letter is. No word yet if any municipality in Wilson County is considering an ordinance banning carry guns from parks. The good news was that the Mt. Juliet officials were in favor of allowing carry by 3:1. Lebanon is a bit more shaky based on the comments and Watertown is an unknown.

To the Editor,

The second amendment is clear in affirming an individual's right to keep and bear arms.

I was disappointed to see several elected officials claim to support gun rights but simultaneously seek to abridge that right.

The flaw in the argument of those who oppose allowing handgun carry permit holders to carry in parks is that a criminal by definition does not follow the law. The criminal knows with great certainty that preying upon people in parks means attacking unarmed law abiding citizens - including those same children who many of our misguided elected officials claim to be so interested in protecting.

My thanks to the officials who publicly stated their support of the law in the article. For those others, please consider this issue with great care and thought. It is rare to see the Second Amendment as a local issue - but today it is. At the next election it is my sincere hope that those who serve the public will proudly state they supported one of our most essential American liberties.

Good letter, from a fellow Wilson countian.

My primary concern here is Charlie Daniels Park in Mt. Juliet. I have friends in LEO, both County and MJPD. They support our rights, generally. It's their bosses with political aspirations who will bow to the sky-is-falling mindset of the misinformed masses.
