If you haven't read the bill, I recommend taking a look at it. The final paragraph seemingly makes HB0716 (Park Carry) ironclad stating:

"SECTION 3. Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, neither the department of

environment and conservation nor any other entity of state or local government shall prohibit

any Tennessee resident from possessing a handgun while within the boundaries of any state

park, if the resident is in immediate possession of a valid handgun carry permit issued to such

resident pursuant to § 39-17-1351."

Tongue in cheeck - call the councilman and wish him luck!!!

Just called his office and the newspaper article is incorrect, it goes to committee on 27 June and the to the commisioner on 17 Aug. Going to call him at home and also may just stop by his house next week. The impression from his secretary is that he is aall for park carry.

Ummm...re read your post and the bill.

The section you posted only covers state parks, however it is from the orginal bill. That is not what passed. What passed was were Seneate amendments 2 (makes the bill) and 3 (removing WMAs) See dates of 5/18/09 & 5/26/09 on the bill's status page

Under the Seneate amendment 2 see Section 2 which specifically allows local goverments to ban carry in local parks. Also Section 3 that amended the state's preemption law to allow local goverments to ban carry in parks.

Not much of a letter writer, but here is what I sent.

Mr. Gillenwaters,

My name is James XXXXXXX. I have been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1974, I am a Christian, a father and a husband.

In 2006 I decided to get my Handgun Carry Permit (HCP) so that no matter where I was or what happened I could protect my loved ones and myself. I am sure that you are aware that to obtain a HCP in the state of Tennessee the applicant has to go through a background check and also a 8 hour training course.

Like all other HCP holders that I know, the carrying of a handgun in public is not a responsibility that I take lightly and I have come to realize that it makes me a more alert and aware person. I carry my handgun concealed, if our kids were playing together in the park and we were sitting next to each other you would never know that I was armed. HCP holders are law abiding citizens, if they weren’t they would not have gone through the trouble of getting a HCP.

On the other hand criminals are not law abiding citizens. They are always looking for a opportunity to take advantage of any situation. I don’t think a criminal that is planning to rape, rob or murder a person is going to let a misdemeanor gun law stop them.

It’s not often you hear people talk about gun control without hearing the words ‘common sense.’ Well, when it comes down to it here is the ‘common sense’ about park carry, HCP holders will obey the law and will not carry in parks. Criminals, who do not obey laws, will continue to carry in parks regardless of what you or any other politician wants.

Sir, I pray that you use a little common sense.

God bless,

James XXXXXXXX

Never said anything passed...nothing relevant has passed; your point is moot.

His point isn't moot at all.

You used the proposed bill to claim that it prohibited local banning of carry in municipal parks.

Which is not the case, as the part you cited only relates to STATE parks.

My point wasn't about whether anything has passed or not. But it has passed the legislator, just waiting on the governor.

One point was you quoted a part of the bill that is no longer what was voted on.

Also the point of the whole thread was about a local goverment attempting to ban carry within the parks under it's control. To me it looked like your point was that local goverments couldn't do that. My point is they very much can do that!!
