Value of a real M-16 unfired

One of the guys here at my work has a real M-16 he bought back in the 70's it is unfired, he has placed a value of 20,000.00 on it, To me I would never pay that for it even if i was rich. Why are these guns so valuable?

Since the Firearms Owners' Protection Act of May 19, 1986, ownership of newly manufactured machine guns has been prohibited to civilians. Machine guns which were manufactured prior to the Act's passage are regulated under the National Firearms Act, but those manufactured after the ban cannot ordinarily be sold to or owned by civilians

Assuming that it is a transferable here is a guide to what "M-16's" have been selling for. To get a good idea of what its worth you really need to find out more about it. Is it a M16A1, M16A2, AR15 conversion, or a DIAS (Drop In Auto Sear), or a LL (lighting link). These are all types of "M16's" and full auto conversions that people call an "M16".

If he has paperwork on it, the going rate right now is around 12-14k for a shooter. It will bring more if it is very clean and has no wear.

For an unfired, registered gun (not receiver), made by Colt's, the values are in the 25k+ range.
