Has anyone had first hand experience with using lacquer or fingernail polish for sealing primers.

I started reloading in 1970 for a Winchester model 70 in .270. Still have the rifle and still shoot it.

I am now reloading for what may be long term storage. Gonna use a GI ammo can but I wanted to seal the primers as well. Won't be many rounds but I want them to go "bang" whenever I need them. I am willing to take the extra steps now to ensure this.

If you are going to do it and want it right use primer sealant not polish or something not made for this.

Absolutely. Fingernail polish will become brittle in short order and chip away. Primer sealant is fairly cheap anyway. BTW, it works pretty good. A few years ago a friend and I loaded some 30/06 and put about a dozen in a cup of water for 2 days. They all went bang. Just be sure to seal the seam around the bullet as well as the primer.

This question may be a joke these days, but I'm trying to find powder and copper-type bullets to make 40 S&W reloads. I have everything else. I heard that Widener's has reloading supplies, but you have to have your FFL license to get it. I wanted to get into reloading, but honestly, I think it's more difficult to find reloading supplies than finished ammo. Any advice is appreciated!:D

Well, maybe you should start your own thread. But you don't need an FFL to shop wideners. You'll have to pay sales tax, which can kill the price of what your getting.

Its usually better to get powder/primers locally anyway. You also have to pay a hazmat fee to ship the stuff.

Give it another month. I think finished ammo and components will be backing up like the calcutta sewer by then.

Try Midway. Sign up for their notifications on reloading components shipments for bullets and brass. They are great to deal with and ship quickly to the Knoxville area. You don't need an FFL to shop there either. Mugster is exactly right on the powder and primer advice; it's best to buy them locally -- just go to the next gun show. If you need to get started PM me and I can loan you enough powder and primers to do a couple of hundred rounds. We dont shoot forty; but we we've probably got something that will work.

I also agree with his observation on the loosening up of supplies for reloading and loaded ammo -- I believe it won't be too long before all this stuff is available again. We are already seeing signs of increasing supply. Don't get in a hurry and let these scalpers charge too much for components like primers that are in short supply now.

Kind regards,

LEROY
