Turns out that Top Notch had 8 mags, 3 still in the GI wrap. Also, whatacountry.com has some GI mags, although their price just went up.

A fellow on the CMP forum has some original, unissued WWII mag pouches, and I have a line on a nice sling and canvas carry bag, so I am pretty set.

An old sailing buddy of mine orders ammo for a local (to Norfolk anyway) gunshop, so I got a good deal on 2 cases.

I'm set! I just need to get home, so I can post a range report.

M1 Carbines I believe but I'm not too keen on older guns either.

The top photo is of two M1 Carbines. The second photo is of two M1 Garands. Both of these guns are what won WWII. I had the pleasure of drooling over the top M1 Garand earlier today. I absolutely love the grain on that wood furniture! (Don't worry dear brother I have no designs on wheedling that one out of you just yet!

Calibre .30 M1 Carbine, magazine fed. Both of these were made in 1943 by Inland. Ballistics are a bit better than a .357 mag (115gr bullet at 1950 FPS), so this 5 pound package is handy and fairly hard hitting inside 100 yards. Originally designed to replace/augment the 1911 .45 pistol for second echelon troops - truck drivers, cooks and the like. Not intended as a front line weapon, it became popular with the troops anyway. More than 6 million were manufactured between 1942 and 1945, by several different manufacturers, including IBM, typewriter company Underwood, National Postal Meter and Rockola, the jukebox maker. Oddly enough, the only gun company to manufacture them was Winchester, which came up with the design. Originally supplied with disposable 15 round magazines, later 30 round magazines were issued when the M2 (full auto) version of the carbine was released. The 'disposable' 15 round magazines are still the best available.

The rifles below are the M1, popularly called the Garand. .30-06, fires from an 8 round, en-bloc clip. Accurate well beyond 600 yards, possibly the finest iron sights on any rifle ever made.

All four of these were obtained through the good graces of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which makes available rifles and ammunition to qualified shooters on a very cost-attractive basis.

You need to get home so we can all come out and shoot your new rifles!

I have three loaded Garand clips sitting on my bookshelf right now. I can go test all the rifles for you, if you like.... :stir:

I know two guys who were at Chosin Reservoir in Korea. One guy hated the M1 Carbine. The other guy, who lives in Bristol, seems to like it better.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the offer, but I've already tested the Garands. Hey, home in November, and the weather should be perfect for getting some trigger time.

Marswolf, you're another Garand owner? Thats' three of us on this board that I know of. Heck, we're ready for our own Garand Match.

Actually, that sounds like fun... Any other M1 owners interested?

No I just own the clips and ammunition. :stir:

Just kidding. I think the Garand is a great weapon. Never have gotten "Garand thumb" either.

And if we are getting picky about the name of the rifle, it's the "United States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1".

Mark, if you want, search for the service rifle thread.

I have a couple of websites posted...if you want to know what unit your garand was issued to, if it ever had depot maint. or any changes made by any armorers...you can find it in there!

pretty much its an individual history for every garand, by serial number

Never have gotten "Garand thumb" either.

Not yet, anyways. There are two types of Garand owners: those who've had their thumbs smashed, and those who haven't...yet.

I haven't yet but I am a newbie... :stir:

I would much rather chance getting my thumb smashed than have to fight those stripper clips on the Springfield or Mauser...

I don't have my rifle s/n's handy out here....

Molon Labe, if you and your wife can make it to the next shoot at my place, maybe we can arrange to get one of the carbines cleaned up for her to try.

Caveat - no wolf steel case ammo, please. Hard on the extractor...
