Was wondering how long before your permit expires can you start the renewal process? Is it regulated by law or do you start when you get your paperwork in the mail?

Thanks

6 months before expiration.

There have been reports that certain DOS personnel have denied that, since they thought it was too early, so take copy of the rules from DOS site with you if you're doing it in person.

Hello - new to forum.

The DOT will mail you a renewal form 3 months before it expires. Both my son & I renewed about 2 1/2 months before expiration. He did his by mail, & I did mine at the local Driver's License Office. About a week before his expiration date, he called Nashville & was told they would go ahead & process it, & that he should get it in 1 to 2 weeks. I forgot & did not call untill mine had actually expired. I was told by a very helpful lady that she would process it that day, (Friday the 5th) & to call her back on Monday to verify that it was on it's way. Two conincidental delays? Maybe, but I'm thinking they don't bother with processing them until you call & ask them to. Could be that a lot of people die, move out of state, or get themselves in some sort of trouble during that 3 month span, so on the average some work is saved on DOT's part by procrastitating. My advise would be to renew pretty much as soon as you get the form, then call about a month before it expires & ask for an update. Two weeks later, do it again.

One more thing. Your first call will have you listen to a bunch of menus & recordings. "0" gets a real person. See if you can get the real person's # if you need to make a follow-up call. My real person actually volunteered her direct # & suggested I call her back for verification that it had been processed.
