Designer Wants Some Input

Hi! I am a furniture designer..First, I am not trying to sell anything at all to anyone. I am working on a project for our company to make stylish ""potterybarn"" type gun cabinets. I have looked at amish gun cabinets, imported gun cabinets and gun safes. What I would like is some input so I can design a cabinet that gun owners would want to use. If you could send me some of your wishes for a display unit, that would be great. Also, if you could tell me somethings that you would hate that would help too. I promise not to contact you or bug you about anything. I am just trying to make the best cabinet possible with the features that gun owners want. We do not import we make all of our furniture in the USA. We just feel like this is an area that is being underserved. We feel like guns should be displayed in a safe secure and beautiful manor, not locked in a safe.

We do want our cabinets to be both "pretty" and safe. So, any input you could give would be wonderful. Also, if there is some law I am not aware of, and we cannot make a furniture gun cabinet, please let me know. I have looked on the internet and couldn't find anything.

I am thankful for any help you can give me. Again, I am just designing this I am not trying to sell anything. I promise if you give me information, I will not contact you.

Welcome to TGO.

I'm not sure how someone would make a wooden display case safe. I guess it depends on the degree of "safe" you're looking for.

If you're looking for something safe enough to keep your children from playing with your firearms, a wooden safe would probably be sufficient. If you're looking for something to protect your firearms from the common criminal, I'm guessing wood is not going to cut it.

As far as your typical display cases, I've never cared for any that I've seen. Then again, I'm not into that type of decor.

My guns are out in the open for home protection, or they're locked in a steel safe. I'm not about displaying for the world to see.

I'd say that the best approach would be to take an existing safe from a reputable manufacturer such as Knoxx, Cannon, Browning, etc. and then fabricate a wooden enclosure for it that would allow it to blend into a more stylish decor.

Now THAT would be cool!! maybe have some additional shelves for "stuff" (cleaning kits, holsters, maybe some ammo) on the sides...with the safe in the middle...

Make sure you design to include or accomodate a dehumidifier. The cabinet needs to be able to eliminate the moisture from the building materials as well as any moisture picked up from outdoor usage. Also, I doubt you're going to develop a stylish "fire safe", but its definitely possible to build a secure and stylish cabinet. You'd just need to add some well placed hardened steel bars. Finally, make the piece so it can be bolted to the floor. If you figure this out, please post your work. My wife owns/operates a residential kitchen, bath & closet design firm. Accomodating a gun safe isn't easy.

As far a safety from theft or fire; I have insurance for that.

I don’t like keeping my rifles in cases in the closet and would like to see a simple, thin, wood display case that mounts to the wall and would hold five or six rifles. Doors that will keep dust out, No drawers or bookshelves needed, just something that looks better than a steel rack.

I have not seen any and thought about making my own. Hurry up and make it so I don’t have to do any work. :tough:

EDIT: You might also what to post this somewhere besides “New Member introductions”. I just stumbled across it in a search.
