AR Scope

I want to get a scope for my AR. While I really like the Red Dot scopes out there, I really want one with some magnification as eyes aren't as good as the y use to be. I really like the idea of a variable scope so that I can "zoom" per se. Now on paper the NC Star scopes like this fits the bill perfectly and even looks tacticool

However, I have read numerous places including here that the NC Stars are junk and not worth the little bit of money you pay. So, here I am, asking you guys what you'd recomend. Again, here is what I'm looking for:

1. Variable magnification, probably no less than 2 but not more than 10. I'm shooting .223 and can't imagine over 150 yard shots.
   
2. I really can't justify spending $1,400 for an ACOG. I'd like to keep it under $450.

Weaver V Series 1x3. It's a true 1 power scope so you can use it like a dot up close with both eyes open or turn it to 3x and engage out to 400 yds easily. Cost is around $150.00 I have one on my 3Gun AR and love it.

id suggest a 3-9x40mm tactical sniper-style scope. not sure on the brand but when i looked into this setup on my ar, hero-gear was going to set me up with one for about $220. and if you want one for cqb you can get quick-detach mounts that maintain zero and swap between the scope and a holographic sight or the like.

and yes NCstar is total junk, had one of their red dot holograhic sights and couldnt get it off fast enough. i ended up giving it to a guy i worked with.

I've got a Millet DMS-1 and love it. I can use it as a two eye open red dot or turn it up to x4 and use like a regular scope. I have heard nothing but good things about them. Run under $200. Millett 1-4x24 DMS Tactical 30mm Riflescope
