Specter of war stirs in Korea...

An article I read on MSNBC last night-but am having problems finding it again tonight-- was reporting last night that North Korean Armor and infantry is on the move---and the DPRK announced last night that they will no longer honor the cease fire which was negotiated in 1953...they have also said that any attempt to board or deflect any vessel bound for North Korean harbors will be considered a full act of war....

they are trying to figure out now whether or not the US would be able to fight a major theater war with North Korea--we only have 28,000 troops in the south and 50,000 in Japan--I just don't think we could fight a third front at once with conventional arms...plus the fact that the DPRK has nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them to Tokyo and Seoul--or drop them on our naval ships as they gather in the sea of Japan....

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Alert level raised on North Korea

OPLAN 5027 was the last major revamp of Major Theater War in the West...OPLAN 5027 Major Theater War - West

the issue here is that OPLAN 5027 depends essentially on the 28,000 US troops and the forward ROK forces to keep pinned down and pushed back a 1,000,000+ DPRK infantry and armor....the counter attack calls for the deployment of 690,000 troops within 90 days of the onset of war with the North...whether this was revised recently I don't know--BUT

I just don't think the ROK and US forces can keep the North Korean army out of Seoul--that plus the fact Kim Jong-il is mentally unstable and has full control of ordering the release of the nuclear weapons--this does not bode well for us. The reason I say this--if the DPRK drops a nuke on Seoul and Tokyo--even if the north is obliterated in a US nuclear counter attack--the economies of the world will most likely be devastated...so even if the north loses in a ball of destruction--they will still win.

I think that's his name. He's in South Korea right now. He started a thread about posting from strange places. His was a coin operated internet thingy, I believe is what he called it.

This could all just be hot air on the part of the DPRK. Wouldn't be the first time. But between North Korea and Pakistan...sh**, there's a good chance we'll see another nuke dropped on (or detonated in) a major metro area in our lifetime. And it's not just the economy that'll suffer, you've got to think about weather patterns and the risk of short or long-term nuclear winter. I guess it would depend on how many were to acutally go off.

strategically speaking--all they have to do is drop 1 on a major industrial area in Asia--Tokyo for example...the resulting economic chaos from that would be tremendous I would think--the thing is--we often don't understand the Arab and Asian mentality--they think in terms of generations ahead, not in a year or two ahead--but in 50-100 years...and strategically all they need is to get one to burst over Tokyo and/or Seoul...

but you are right--a full nuclear response from the US against the North would raise the possibility of a short term nuclear winter over some parts of the world--and then there is the possibility that the Chinese could enter the any possible war on the side of the North...that would be extremely bad to say the least.

and you also have to consider possible Chinese involvement in Asia--they are just itching to take Taiwan back, --and the US bound up in a new Korean war could be just what they need to do it.

We can't even fully equip and support the troops we already have on the battlefield (Iraq and Afghanistan) I don't really believe we could switch gears and put any kind of a substantial force into Korea. Our resources have been drawn off into the desert to the point that we may very well be incapable of putting up a good fight in Korea even with conventional forces. We cannot withdraw safely from the Middle East, so discount those forces. Forces that have come back are drawn out and ill equipped and should not be redeployed piecemeal into Korea. What forces are left are already scheduled into Afghanistan in the next two years and have trained for that style of fighting, not mass conventional war. It is no mistake that North Korea is getting froggy at this time, they can read the situation and now is the time to get scary.

Where did you get stuck Justaguy? I spent a year over there way back when the father was still in charge. I was at Camp Pelham just south of the Imjim river in a little ville at that time called Sonya-Ri. 1st of the 4th FA (a very capable FA unit if you know what I mean):)

We all heard the talk that before he died, Kim Il Sung was going to reunite the pennisula....oh well, missed that mission.

I hope the sane few leading the north wake up and don't try anything further. There will be some surprises for them if they come south. No doubt if it's a major push they have the numbers. What they don't have is the know how, the technology or the will to use it with all their conscripts. They better know how to swim as well and have plenty of bridging support. Going to be a long trip south with nothing to cross those rivers on!

Tell the guy driving the green Hyundai taxi to bali-wa and that I said Yobo sayo! Keep your powder dry!

I'm stuck at camp Long, one of the smallest camp's on the peninsula now. It's on the outskirts of Wonju. Not a bad place at all to be honest, hell the highest ranking officer is a full bird and the highest enlisted is a Master Sergent. :) Needless to say it's pretty quiet here.

Well the taxi's are white Hyundai's now. ;) And I know better then to tell them to bali-bali. I was taking a ride in one last weekend and the girl I was riding with made the mistake of telling him to hurry. Next thing you know we were blasting down the tollroad going over 110mph swerving in and out of traffic. The girl I was riding with looked just like this --> :screwy:

Yup, good times. :drama:

Keep your head down man, if the mess breaks loose I might just re-enlist. Give 'em hell like my crazy ass Uncle Bob did!

I'll drag Poak and Bkelm with me. Might have to Bkelm in a rucksack though...
