I'm heading to Italy July 1st to finish up my degree. I get a couple of free weekends and I'm staying for a little while afterward, what are the places to go to and see?

My brother went to Italy recently and visited Venice. He said he was kinda dissappointed with it, and it was dirty. Also said the whole city had a stinch to it, guess from all the water.

If you can visit the Alps, I've heard they are absolutely amazing...

Venice does smell.

Florence is the nicest of the larger cities. You could spend 2-4 good days there.

Be careful in Rome, lots of gypsies and thieves everywhere. (Isn't that a Cher song?) Same for Sicily and Naples.

The countryside is very nice.

If you go to Venice, be sure to take a tour of the glass blowing plants (see guys actually form glass pieces by blowing.. hard to explain but completely cool). I haven't been to Venice since they banned feeding birds in St. Marks Square, so hopefully it has less bird crap...

Travel along the Amalfi Coast. Absolutely the prettiest part of Italy that I've seen. You can get a room right on the water. Positano is where we stayed

Rome of course for the history, Florence for the art (Statue of "David" is there. Breathtaking).

You'll have a blast wherever you go

(try taking a Eurorail to Paris for a weekend, best city in the world :) )

Pompeii, how could I forget. Definitely worth a visit. Leaning tower and Liviorno would come way behind Pompeii in terms of coolness :shake:

They were having a problem with trash pickup and it being just left in the street. People just started burning huge piles of garbage.

Pompeii was awesome, but it was definitely NOT cool. Was there last July. Good luck with the heat. B)

Yes, glass blowing is the key thing to see in Venice. What they do there is also 'mind blowing'.
