DVD Problem

Guest OZZ

Recommended Posts

My DVD player has started displaying a message "Unknown Disc" when most discs are loaded. I can play some old DVDs, but this mainly has started happening with newer ones.

I plan on picking up a lens cleaning disc today. This topic is not covered in my manual under troubleshooting.

Anybody got any ideas or had this problem? The player is about 18 months old.

I had that problem. After cleaning the player and still having that problem, I went to Walmart and paid $30 for a new one. Now, I just use On-Demand or watch online. Do you have kids? Try to get the PBJ sammich off that lens.

No small kids around anymore so PBJ not a problem. :) I should have mentioned that this Player is built into my home stereo theater system and I'd rather try a few things that may fix it before spending a few hundred bucks on a new one right off the top.

My BIL brought 3 seasons of 24 on DVD with him this past weekend and my wife is dying to starting watching the years she missed.

See if it allows for the country code to be changed. Maybe it got knocked off the US code and is trying to watch French discs now! Change it quick though because all you will be able to watch is "Amadeus" and "How to loose a war in 40 days"

How old is it?

They MAY have changed the encryption on DVDs recently, or it may have just given up the ghost.

About 18 months old. I think you may be right in that it has just given up the ghost.
