should physicians routinely inquire about guns?

The only area where I can see any merit to this (and I say maybe) is where children are the patients, not the adult. My wife has worked for pediatric hospitals here entire career and said this is standard protocol to ask if they fear children may be at risk/harm.

Had an appointment with my cardiologist yesterday 8/20/13 and during screening nurse said we got new survey.
First question was: "Are there any guns in the house?" about 15 more question followed and I think one was have you ever or are you depressed about anything? I asked why the first question, and she said new forms from Medicare that they have to follow on each patient. I am retired Federal Employee and my B/C ins. that I keep changed when I became 62 and qualified for Medicare. B/C (per Gov't) can only pay what Medicare would pay. I only have Part A and
B/C covers what would be Part B, (Doctors Meds etc). So I got the Medicare survey. Be very careful if you have any depression, or ANY mental problems, I think Big Bro. is going to use this to take your guns. Also they would take any family members also if you live in same house.
Times are changing folks.

Instead of Big Bro. taking our guns and family members, it's time we the people take back our country from these tyrants. Times are changing b/c we're allowing them to change. We really don't have to take this communist s###.

Had my daughter's pediatrician ask me and the wife. At the same time she asked about other risk factors as well, like pools, cabinets etc. So the gun part didn't bother me. My wife stopped her when she started talking about safety stuff and basically told her I was a safety fanatic. We then had a good conversation where I educated the doctor on several quality safety programs out there for kids and parents. Now instead of trying to talk something she doesn't know well, if you say yes she offers you a sheet with some safety resources and leaves it at that.

no they should not routinely ask about guns.

If a gun is why you are seeing them I would say it is okay.

For example.

Doctor: "Do you own the Glock that you shot yourself in the butt with?"

And example of not okay might be
Doctor: " There now, the hangnail is all removed, apply this ointment twice a day,
By the way do you own guns?"

Pretty much I am going to tell the doctor to stick the the medical subject at hand.

Proper response is,
"Yes, of course it was a Glock, but ownership details are privileged information."

I have never shot myself in the butt (or anywhere else) with my Glock. Am I doing something wrong? :)
