Ramifications of an old DUI

Stupidly, at 18 years old, I got a DUI in Florida. I plead no-contest, paid my debt to society, and actually learned my lesson. It's one of those things I wish I could go back in my life and get a do-over. I pay for it all the time, even now, 25 years later. Every time I apply for a job, drivers license, etc., I have to suck up my pride and fess up.

My question is, will this prevent me from being able to purchase a handgun or get the carry permit? I am now a law abiding member of society and have not had another run-in with the law since (other than a speeding ticket). I was always under the impression that a DUI was a misdemeanor, and wouldn't affect any of my rights, but I just want to be sure.

Thanks

If you have been convicted of a crime that is punishable by more than 11 months 29 days, you may have issues with purchasing a firearm. I know plenty of people with DUI's on their record that have purchased firearms.

TN law allows you to purchase and to obtain a permit. No problems there. There are DUI limits on carry permits, but one 25 years ago will not stop you. I think the rule is none in the last 5 years.

The applicant has not been convicted of the offense of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in this or any other State two (2) or more times within ten (10) years from the date of application and that none of such convictions has occurred within five (5) years from the date of application or renewal.

Sleep safely and stop beating yourself up. No one knows what you did or will be checking back that many years. Sometimes shadows follow us but in your case it is time to stop worrying.

If they disallowed people with DUIs from getting a gun in this state, half the citizens would be barred.

I know someone who had one in KY a few years ago. No problem buying guns or getting his permit.
