Don't text and drive!

No texting while driving bill got signed into law today if anyone cares. 50 dollar fine and it's not considered a moving violation.

It exempts state officers, EMTs, campus police officers, etc.

I could care less. I don't do it much and certainly not in traffic, but do we really need to be baby-sat this damn much?

I am against it solely from a nanny state POV. I disabled texting on my phone, which should be a clue to how I feel about texting as a practice.

Here is the real question, why are cops/emts etc exempt? Think about it, they may very well be going 100 mph down the highway, and need to concentrate on not causing a real serious wreck, or as an EMT, having worked 20 hours, driving someone to a hospital. Why on Earth should they NOT be punished if they text while driving?

OK - I thought being a reckless driver would cover this.. but lets pretend for a moment this was necessary... How do you police this? I'm looking into my lap and touching something.. am It texting? am I search for a restuarant on my phone? Perhaps I'm sending an instant message using AIM for my 3g enabled phone - Is this texting (Haven't read the exact wording of the law)? It doesn't use the same technoogy or service as a 'text' does. How do you know I'm not fiddling with the phonebook trying to call somone. Am I tryiong to type in my GPs location?

The list of things you COULD be doing go on and on. This seems like some elgislation to give politicians somethign to talk about when they campaignf or re-election and nothing more. They can't possibly expect police to enforce this... and not to mention all of the judges that wll through out the fines when somone comes into the courtroom and says "I was trying tor ead the address for my appointment" and the officer's only evidence to the contrary is that "she was looking down and I saw her fingers moving on the screen"...

Any LEOs have thoughts on this? Am I way off base here?

Being a motorcyclist, I'm all for this bill.

Although not on my bike at the time, someone almost ran me off Hwy70 last week... texting w/ both hands and steering w/ their knee...

I actually saw someone texting while riding their motorcycle a few days ago

but I've also seen people read a newspaper and drive with their knee...

Eat some fast food and drive with their knee...

Shave and drive with their knee...

Put on makeup and drive with their knee..

TALK on the phone and drive with their knee

Various combinations of the things above...

should we write laws for all of these? I guess I better get on the horn and tell my representative to start working on getting these laws passed also

/sarcasm

Seriously though, I feel ya from a 2 wheeler POV,but it's like the gun laws dude. it doesn't really change a mindset. The only thing this is gonna do is cause people to try and be sneakier, which means hiding it, which means looking down more.

big brother needs to gets its big nose out of my business.

if I text and break a traffic law then get me for breaking the law.

Oh yeah, more laws thats the ticket!

The biggest joke of it all is that it is not considered a moving violation, WTF??

Yeah, I hear ya. I guess I don't really care either way. I mean, it's not going to create more people texting, and I don't do it anyway, so it's non-consequential.

That and talking on the cell phone should not only be illegal, but a super hefty fine shoud be imposed on one who does it. Statistics back me up on this one. Nothing worse than missing a lite, missing a turn or sitting at a green lite because some moron is on the cell phone. I did not make it thru 20 years in the military to be a victim of some cell phone junkie running into me.

If a cop catches you in this situation you would be lucky if he just writes you up for texting. :D

I'd have to pm it to ya anyway lol I honestly don't know why the girl isn't a model or actress. Cool thing is she's not your average female cop either, I.E no chip on her shoulder about playing with the boys.
