Gun values

A friend of mine has inherited a few guns she’s interested in selling.  I’m not familiar with them as I’m not really a revolver guy.  One is a S&W stainless .38 model 64-1. Another S&W .357 blued with a model number that appears to be 843 288 maybe. Picture below.   Can anyone give me a swag on value?  The stainless .38 seems to have a little wear but not much.  The .357 also seems to have some wear but both are filthy and hard to tell. I’ll probably end up cleaning them up for her.  Supposedly one these was her grandfathers duty revolver as a motorcycle cop for years.

Bottom one appears to be a pre model 28 ? what were the numbers on the butt of the frame?

The blue is definitely a pre-model 28 Highway Patrolman with replacement grips and quite possibly refinished..

If my name was @Defender I’d have my eyes on it.  Even if you’re not a revolver guy, that model is one of the best to own.

1954-1955 S prefix model pre 28. As Garufa said the original grips have been replaced.

The blued one is terribly filthy. Have to see condition after I clean it up.

It does look nasty but being kept in a foam lined case for who knows how long will do that as it appears here.  I still think it’s already been refinished as the blued trigger and hammer are dead giveaways.

I bet it cleans up fairly well with judicious use of oil, 0000 wool, and a light touch for rust spots.

Smiths of that age have a butter smooth action, I assume that is the case here?

The 64-1 is the stainless version of the plain old Model 10/M&P Service revolver. Very popular, but also pretty common. I'd guess it to sell somewhere around $500, maybe more depending on the buyer.

However, the Highway Patrolman/pre-28 is a sought after collector's item. Even in its rough condition it could bring $800-1000. As for a refinish, could just be a trick of the light. If the hammer and trigger are case colored, its probably the original finish. But if they actually are blue, it definitely has been aftermarket refinished and that will hurt its value considerably.
