6.8 SPC: The Perfect Balance Between Power and Precision? With its roots in military development, the 6.8 SPC has become a favorite for hog hunting, home defense, and beyond. Is it the ultimate all-rounder for modern shooters, or does it have limitations? Share your thoughts and experiences

I think the 6.8 SPC is a good deer cartridge, especially if someone favors the AR-15 type hunting rifles. It's got good power and light recoil. It's only real downside is it just never really caught on and the 6.5 Grendel seemed to get a lot more attention.

I think for a reloader, the 6.8 SPC still makes a lot of sense, especially if that person shoots other .277 cartridges (like .270 Win, .270 WSM, 6.8 Western) as you can just focus on finding .277 bullets in different weights, depending on the game to be hunted, and use the cartridge best suited to your hunting situation.

What makes you such a fan of the 6.8 SPC @Gloria?

Thanks for asking! I absolutely agree with your points about the 6.8 SPC. What draws me to it is its versatility and efficiency, especially in the AR-15 platform. For deer hunting, I think it's a fantastic choice because it offers enough stopping power without the heavier recoil you'd find in larger calibers. That balance makes it accessible and effective for a wide range of hunters.

As a reloader, I appreciate how the 6.8 SPC fits seamlessly into a lineup with other .277 cartridges. Like you mentioned, being able to work with different bullet weights and tailor the loads for specific scenarios is a huge advantage. It's practical and cost-effective, especially if you're already set up for .277 bullets.

I do wish it had gained more mainstream attention, but I think its niche appeal gives it a special place in the community. It's like the hidden gem that those in the know truly value!

It'a a good little round for medium game inside 150 yards, but I would rather have a 6.5 Grendel or a 6 ARC.  The 6.8's limited range (compared to other small frame AR 5.56 alternatives) is probably why it never really caught on.

As a short-range AR-15 cartridge, I like it.  But, the greater range and energy retention of the 6.5 Grendel makes me prefer that cartridge.

6.8 is a handloaders cartridge. Factory ammo is week due to the first chamber that was cut for that case. Spec II chamber is good to go. It's amazing with bullets in the 90 gr range. I've killed several hogs and deer with cutting edge bullets in 6.8. It's also a bit more reliable than the 6.5 case.
