Real ID ??

When did we start with this real ID DL-

How many of you feel the need for this Federal ID?

I never and I mean never fly-

What type of Federal Building would a person need this ID to enter-

So I guess my question is would I really need this star on my license-

Just another form of keeping an eye on us-I already have the upgraded handgun permit where the TBI already runs your background-

I don’t have one. I may get it whenever mine is due to be renewed, but not planning on a special trip to do it.

One of the women my wife works with was worked up telling my wife that she has to get this or the world will end-

I didn't think so but if there is a loud explosion I know what to blame-

My wife got hers, but her license was due for renewal anyway.  I have a passport, and I am not aware of anything this magical license will do for me the passport won’t.

Without a REAL ID you are not a real person, merely a figment of your own imagination.

Glad to know that my suspicions have been correct. I am not real just made up in someone's mind.

When my wife and I moved to TN five years ago we got the REALID licenses. As Krunchnik mentioned, it's a necessity if you're going to fly.  I don't see it as an intrusion, but I understand that some folks might.

It's about the stupidest thing I've seen in a long time, and for the government that's saying quite a bit.

To show you how unnecessary this was, the law was passed in 2005 when the 9/11 commission recommended a national standard for IDs.  But it's been so miserable to implement the kept pushing the date.  Had the simply made any state issued ID a real ID, this could have been phased in easy enough in half the 20 years this is been an annoyance.

Should see dmv... can't get near it. Panic mode is on.

I was kinda wondering about that possibility-

Since I have a CDL, I have a real ID by default. The requirements for both are the same with regards to proof of domicile and such.

I didn't see any real need for it either. Figured I'd just do it when I had to renew anyway. But the state came to our town and set up a special temporary station for a few days so that all city employees could get the Real ID.  Being a retired city employee, I qualified.  The place was 5 minutes from my house. I figured that I'd have to do it sooner or later, so I took advantage of it. In and out in 30 minutes. Sure was better than waiting for hours at the DMV. 👍

As I understand it, this is to verify that the person presenting this license is indeed who they say they are. But if the BGs are good enough to fake a driver's license, wouldn't it be simple enough to add that little star? I never have understood the point of it. Can somebody explain please?

I know who I am, but it's for the benefit of curious authoritative persons to know who I am, too.  So, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.  If it distinguishes me from people who shouldn't be here, it'll come in handy.

I have a passport and didn't really need it but I went ahead and did it anyway. I figure some dumbass will pass a law you can't go into the tag office, courthouse, etc. without it. It's easier than carrying a passport if I need to fly domestically.

I have a CDL. It is NOT a real ID.

Yeah my Class A wasn't either. I had to get it changed a year or so ago.

Funny side note: you have to go through a background check to adopt.

We adopted 3 on the same day. Guess how many background checks we had to do. That's right...everything in duplicate times 3.

Mine has the gold star and I don’t remember having to provide anything extra other that what was already federally required for my CDL w X endorsement.

Did you have to do all the paperwork certified by the county, state. and tgen federal. We have to do in 3 states...

Mine do not, but it’s been a while.

This. My passport will work fine for flying and entering Federal buildings, but I don't want to carry a passport just to fly domestically. It would be one more thing to keep up with or have stolen.

Get a passport card - it's only $30 and good for 10 years. It doesn't work for international air travel but will get you on a domestic flight. It can be used for Canada/Mexico ground entrance and return.

I did get the passport card when I renewed my passport last year. I did my driver's license 5 years ago.

Between background checks for my insurance and financial licenses I have any documents needed sitting in a file readily available. I don't even give it a second thought at this point. It's just the insanity of the government machine.

TN started issuing the star license shortly after our last renewal.  Since we haven't flown in close to 20 years, with no plans to, we decided to wait for the next go around of renewals.  I agree with those who think the whole thing is dumb.

If this is the biggest concern in your life I would say you're doing pretty good :).   I have probably been fingerprinted 100 times for work so there isn't anything out there about me they don't already know.

Did mine when I got TSA precheck and global entry a few years ago. Our DMV is pretty low traffic, my appt was on-time and was done in a 10 mins. They didn't want anything they don't already have access to. Probably one of the lowest impact .gov things I've ever had to do.

Trying to get the 50+ discounted Sam's membership with ID.me on the other hand....totally intrusive and unnecessary. Why Sam's thinks they need to take $10 off is what I would like to know.
