A person who legally possesses a gun would not have it seized during periods of martial rule under a proposal headed to the governor for his consideration.

The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Jack Johnson of Franklin was approved 26-0 on Thursday. The companion bill passed the House last month.

Johnson says martial rule is the same as martial law at the federal level. He proposed the bill after law enforcementmag-glass_10x10.gif in New Orleans went door to door seizing weapons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

He says he doesn't expect such behavior in Tennessee, but believes legislation should be in place just in case.

Gov. Phil Bredesen spokeswoman Lydia Lenker says the governor will review the legislation once it reaches his desk.

They can only confiscate what you either give them or they find. So keep some items off the books and out of sight.

nope Ive been doing this a long time and im just tired of all the misinformation thats out here on the web, and im not wanting people to jump to conclusions and get into trouble.

I answer phone calls all day long with students thinking all these possibilities are now law and reality.

I'll try and not be so negative in the future.

I think the 26-0 Senate vote says a lot about the support for this bill.

This is good news for us in Memphis. God forbid we have a big quake here. I've talked with people from the Red Cross who said that if we ever had a big one, it would make Katrina look like a picnic. We will need our guns more than ever if we have a disaster here. This city is an incident away from a melt down (IMO).

Yeah my wife and I were just talking about that. We have been admittedly lazy in our disaster preparation. We are starting to get a list together of items we'd need for several weeks of Katrina-like conditions. After that we'll probably procrastinate and not actually do anything with the list.
