VE Day + 64 (Thanks Fallguy!)

May 7, 1945.

German admiral Carl Doenitz unconditionally surrenders to Allied forces at Reims, France, thus ending the war in Europe.

Thank you, all you Eurotheatre veterans. Though your numbers dwindle, you'll live on in our hearts.

Ah, yes, I was but 7 YO but I do remember the celebrations, how happy folks were. A war for free men that the US had to win.

Germany surrendered on May 7. That's the important date to the WW2 vets I have talked to when I was younger. At the time of the surrender, both sides were happy that it was over. I had the opportunity to interview a German veteran for a report back when I was in school. I told about his medal he won for shooting down ten warplanes. I told about his service in Normandy, and his service at the Russian front. He said that when he was in Russia, it would get too cold to shoot the guns, and the Germans and the Russians would go meet each other and trade food and cigarettes, then get back in their foxholes when the sun warmed the guns up enough to shoot. They were ready to surrender. That happened on May 7, at Reims. VE day was on the following day, like the paper in the picture says.

My grandfather met a few Germans that fought US forces... on June 6, 1944.

Sadly, there's zero coverage of this sort of thing in the news anymore. Such an important day in the history of humanity and no mention of it anywhere...

Haha, true!

He brought back a few "souvenirs" off his adversaries. Two of the cooler items being a Hitler Youth knife, which he gave me back in my teens. It's certainly one of my prized possessions. The other being a Luger, which a shady uncle seems to have taken possession of back when my grandfather's Alzheimer's set in. I hope to repossess it one of these days... or deal out a swift kick to the balls if I find out he sold it.
