My primary rifle is a M4gery with iron sights in 6.5G.  I also have one with a 20" barrel that I use with whatever scope I want to use at the time.  I also have an upper in 5.56mm that I can plink with using a .22lr conversion kit.

If you only have funds for one rifle, get it in 5.56mm with a .22 kit.  That'll take care of all varmints from mice and moles up to coyotes.

I also have an FN-FAL in 7.62NATO that is good for larger varmints.  There are chamber inserts in .32acp that are VERY useful for small critters (rabbits, skunk, etc) and are pretty quiet.  But the chamber inserts make the rifle a single shot.

Nice! I need to look into it a bit more. Maybe build a 6.5g upper that I can use on a multi-use lower. Got the 5.56 taken care of so far 👍🏼

I’m not a huge fan of Mossberg, always found them to rattle too much and usually feel a bit cheap.

I’d suggest, if a semiautomatic shotgun in your price range is truly your desire, consider an older Remington 1100.  Lots of older, cheap options with aftermarket options.

Back to your original question....the Beretta 300 is very reliable and about as good as it gets for the money.  It can be had in a tactical model.  Also can easily take care of a coyote at 50 yds.  As far as ammo, 00 Buck in federal flight control, 8 pellet is regarded as one of the best.  Same thing can be had in the Hornady Black and low-recoil Remington.  2 3/4 " is all you need and this will help with mag capacity.  Be aware, as shells come from the factory they can be a little longer in comparison when unfired this again can cut down mag capacity by 1. Preference for VanComp side saddle velcro cards.

PS:  if you have your gun, I recommend training with Randy Harris, known on this forum as Cruel Hand Luke.  This is a class relatively close to you:

Steve, thanks for the shout out!

If I need a bayonet on my home defense gun I have made serious tactical errors. I do admire a good trench gun though.

I have always wanted an 1897 Winchester, because nothing says “Get out of my house!” Like a slam fire capable, 12 gauge Shotgun, loaded with 00 buck, and a 19 inch bayonet

I bought a winchester 1200 many years ago from target on whitebridge road, yes target used to sell firearms. I added the bayonet lug heat shield myself.

So to answer your question, no not a M12.

Got his older brother in the safe.  Model 12 solid frame 18 inch riot... Sitting next to 2 model 97s -- both riots; one flaming bomb marked, the other police marked.  Browning BPS ( what the model 12 should have evolved into ) 18 inch riot by the bed . I confess to being a Winchester pump gun riot junkie...

Got a couple of M12’s and a riot style 1897 for cowboy shoot’in.  I arguably see the M12 and REM M31 (got 2 of them too) as both the top of the pump ‘best ever made’
