There was a time when I thought he was the worst POTUS in history, but those tricky Dems kept sending bigger idiots to DC and made a liar out of me.

Nonetheless, RIP 39

Here's an alternative historical sketch n musing y'all might be interested in:

"...Jimmy Carter's family was far from poor.  He was raised with a golden spoon in his mouth and was admitted to the Naval Academy on scholarship thru a bunch of back room political mascinations. I can't remember his degree, but he attended Nuclear Propulsion School when it was in it's flower and there wuz lotsa research goin on.
He was dispatched to Britain to act as part of an advisory group on how to handle the Windscale Nuclear Disaster ( take the time ta research this one. ). He was critical of nuke power and thought the dangers outweighed the benefits.
He came out of the Navy and became the Democrat Governor of Georgia, and later became a presidential candidate.
There is one reason that Jimmy Carter was elected president in 1976.  The presidential pardoning of Richard Nixon by Gerald Ford.  This sickened the citizenry of the good ole USA regarding " the political class " and they took it out on the Republicans.
Once elected, Carter picked a group of anti American, anti capitalist incompetent buffoons for his cabinet.  He also set about upping the pressure on Iran ( as others had done ) to save and re patriate the " Real " Iatolah Komeni back to Iran, which destroyed modern Iran forever.
Komeni lead a " revolution " that killed and displaced almost the entirety of the citizenry of Iran, and is, in fact, the father of the Iran you see today.
He replaced a pretty reasonable modern moderate citizenry with mad dog Islamic jhadist shouting " Death to America"..
Jimmy Carter backing and coddling of Komeni was principally responsible for the killing of millions in the Middle East, including what you are seeing today in modern Iran.
He was paid back for this backing of Komeni by the new  Iranian regime taking Americans hostage in Iran; where he held them and taunted Carter for his entire presidency.
They were finally released when Reagan won in a landslide some 444 days later.
Carter was just as inept at home, as he implemented a bunch of economic policies that caused an inflation rate north of 17 percent, destroying many middle class American families in the process.
He appointed S. David Freeman as the Chairman of TVA to dismantle the TVA Nuclear Program.  He cancelled 7 nuclear units and delayed two more.
Jimmy Carter was a one term president who symbolized all that is wrong with the political class.
He was consistently on the wrong side of every political and technological issue of his time.
He retired into obscurity to be considered the worst president in modern times ( until Obama n Biden showed up ).
Carter knew his political legacy was trash, so he set about to re-invent himself from a failed politician with blood on his hands, into a grandfatherly, seemingly kind, alturistic, simple, good hearted philanthropist who sponsored n helped poor folks into homes AKA " Habitat for Humanity ".
This strategy worked over the 40 or so years since his unceremonious outster as a one term president who damaged America's influence, the American people, and the people of the middle east in terrible ways.
This old man has the blood of countless innocent men women and children on his hands, not to mention the ruination of countless Iranians ( several of whom I worked with at TVA ) who had to flee Iran to save their and their family's lives... They were the lucky ones.
Jimmy Carter's life has been far from that of a grandfatherly, alturistic philanthropist who helped people and served as an example to all...
He is simply another scheming, dirty, foolish politician with blood on his hands looking for public approval and absolution, much like Andrew Carnegie.
I simply will not give it to him.  I saw first hand the damage he wrought in the Middle East, America, Israel, and the world...
All this from a 78 year old crumedgeon who saw it all and felt it's effects.
The truth is that I wished Carter had lived to be 150, so he could continue to remember, be sorry for,  and hopefully, do pentinence for all the bad things he caused.
Thus endeth the lesson from your ole buddy leroy who saw it all unfold.
Do not mourn for Jimmy Carter... He was the " worst of the worst "... "...

He had more success than people realize.  The feelings about his term, coupled with the way Reagan's optimism told the tale of the terms after cloud things up a bit.

Jimmy Carter helped bring Egypt and Israel to peace; pretty hard to overstate how important that was then and now.  While Nixon may have went to China, Carter gave them formal diplomatic recognition.

Domestically, he pushed deregulation in the oil, airline, and transportation industries.  Yeah, a Democrat removing regulation.  He also appointed Paul Volker as Chairman of the Fed, knowing full well the plans Volker had were likely to feel draconian, and his presidency would suffer just as badly.  That and the "malaise" speech are a moral courage we just don't get anymore in our politicians.

His life before and after the Presidency were pretty impactful too.  I'm grateful for the service he gave throughout his life.

An incredible humanitarian and an utterly shi##y President.

We can thank him for 90% of the problems that we have in the Middle East and 100% of the problems that we have with Iran.  Everything else nice said about his presidency is an attempt to whitewash history.

I grew up in the 70's.  I remember how bad it was.

David...

Like most all ambitious men who stand ( or stood ) on the world stage;  Jimmy Carter was mindful of his legacy.  His legacy wuz terrible.  Carter earnestly set out ( I think ) to rehabilitate that legacy, and did to some extent.  That success is evident by the comments we see here on TGO and elsewhere.

I was 30 years old when Carter wuz elected; like you, I witnessed the damage, not just to America, but to the world.

In sum: Jimmy Carter's damage to humanity in Iran and the Middle East far outweighs the home based humanitarianism he demonstrated for the last fourty plus years of his life.  The Middle East is full of graves that that are direct casualties of his ( and America's ) actions as president.  If Carter had any sense of reality, he had to realize the devastation and suffering his actions brought on the Middle East.  I would like to think that it changed him.  Here's hopin it did...  That said, only God can give absolution and forgiveness to Jimmy Carter.  Here's hopin he did.  The consequences of Jimmy Carter's actions as president were nothing less than horrific.
