Need Knoxville Information

I have a child going to UT this Fall. I am not familiar with the City of Knoxville.

Where are the areas to avoid, good areas etc? We need to stay hotel for a couple days. I am looking at a place in Strawberry Plains(NE) or N Peters Rd.(W). Any guidance would be appreciated.

N Peters would be closer to campus for you. Good area with alot of good restaraunts close by on Parkside and Turkey Creek.

Definitetly N Peters area. Lots of places to stay, restaurants. Etc. Far more convenient to UT. Basically everything Dag said.

East and old north knoxville are the areas to avoid generally speaking......north it gets better near fountain city and east after ashville highway. Strawberry plains wouldn't be bad, but with the I-40 construction its easier to reach campus and less to have to travel through if you stay around N. Peters/cedar bluff area

Pretty much, East Kville, all of downtown (including the University), and close in North Kville are the areas I would not live in.

I never had any trouble while I was at UT (2006 grad). I was occasionally hassled by beggars in the downtown area. The gas stations on Cumberland Ave. are some of the worst areas for that. Every time I pumped gas I was asked for money. I never had any problems in the dorm either.

If your child is a female then that is a different story. As long as she doesn't go anywhere on campus alone after dark she should be safe.

Send me a PM if you are looking for advice on off-campus housing.

Maryville Alcoa area might be an option, a little farther drive but convenient to UT. Nice twin cities just have to drive alcoa highway

I lived in UT campus/downtown area.....just same thing Nolo said....you'll run into beggars asking for money but they're everywhere though. I graduated in 2008.

I live near Maryville/Alcoa and its pretty decent city....not bad of a drive to UT from there....just straight shoot on Alcoa Hwy. If that isn't an option, N. Peters/Cedar Bluff is an excellent choice since I know many people living there.

Let us know if you have questions.

I assume the Freshman will live in a dorm this year? So where to live is not so much an issue. I lived in Fort Sanders my entire career and would have had it no other way. Then again I'm a guy and could not afford anywhere else.

When I was a student there had a girlfriend and other friends that lived in apartments in the Papermill area. Lots of college age people around there and the access to UT cannot be beat. Had another GF that lived in Maryville and that was awful. For one, that's nearly a 20 mile trip up Alcoa Hwy which can be shut down at anytime due to an accident. If you're trying to get to class or make a test you're screwed.

Before you're child starts apartment hunting ask again. There are many complexes, especially in West Knoxville to avoid like the plague.

This coming from someone living in Oak Ridge.

(Just kidding, could not resist)

to the OP,

there is no where safer than anywhere else around here. I live in rural knox county (east and north of downtown )and there was a guy shot during a home invasion last night not 1 mile from my house. As for out west, not far from Peters Rd. there was a guy shot and killed last night outside a restaurant in a "nice" part of town.

So there is no good answer to this puzzle.

Except for campus which is a gun free zone. :D

What hotel are you planning on staying at? The Holiday Inn has just been remodeled and is pretty decent. I don't know what price range you are looking for, most of the hotels are pretty nice. There is one inexpensive one that I wouldn't stay at on Cedar Bluff, unless you speak Spanish and don't mind all the MS-13 tattoos.
