It has nothing to do with US history.. so why in the heck do ppl, Americans.. celebrate it? I have no clue.. maybe someone can fill me in.. unless they are catering to the illegals..

Well with the mexicans trying to get the "o" man to get that treaty ratified.. I think it is about time to stop..

Or, as in my case, continue to refuse to start...

TEQUILA and CERVEZA. Mariachi bands are nice, too.

Yeah, I have to concur. Just a reason to get plastered and hit on random college chicks whilst puking in a storm drain.

Because it's an excuse to have fun? Just because it isn't American doesn't mean you can't go out and enjoy yourself.

No doubt it has gotten bigger in recent years due to the growing number of " illegals".

Music City celebrates Cinco de Mayo | www.tennessean.com | The Tennessean

From the comments:

Who really cares about Cinco de Mayo? This is America, not Mexico!! If you want to celebrate a Mexican holiday, go to Mexico. I could not care less if the Mexicans beat the French (Like that is a big accomplishment)
Then don't celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Valentines Day, or Christmas. Man the racism runs deeper than I thought!!!
Right on. And Stevesintn (Or maybe we should refer to him as Estebanentn just for tomorrow...) might not know this, but one could make a completely valid argument that Cinco de Mayo is more an American holiday than a Mexican one, as it is generally celebrated much more boisterously here than it is in Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo is hardly even noticed and barely qualifies as a holiday in Mexico. It's been artificially blown up out of proportion in this country by people trying to *gasp* sell you something.

True.. so i say.. it is time to halt to the false pretense of the holiday.. and let the venders know..

Let's see. On the selling end it's an excuse to sell lots of booze and party supplies. On the buying end it's an excuse to drink and party. Yeah, good luck with that.

It's not an ethnic thing. (and even if it was: so what?) It's purely a monetary thing. People like an excuse to party.

Seriously folks, get your panties out of a wad. It's not a subversive move by illegals to takeover our homeland, it's a marketing ploy. Go out and take a look around... there's no Mexicans celebrating it... just a bunch of middle-class white folks and college kids. :)

Yep.. that is what pains me..

Same as St.Patricks Day Guinness for everyone!!!

Yea but the Irish have done alot more for this country then just build some hotels and do yard work. I also don't believe there are an overwhelming amount of my kinsman here illegally and burdening the U.S system.

I will add that I'm not going to celebrate it because I still hold a grudge that they killed John Wayne in The Alamo. B)

A little history for those who may not know...

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank....and the cargo was forever lost....

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery....were disconsolate at the loss....

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.... The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th.... and is known....of course....as Sinko de Mayo...:pleased:
