NOBLE, Okla. -- A stray bullet from the gun of a Noble police officer, meant for a snake in a rural area, struck and killed a 5-year-old boy Friday night, authorities confirmed.

Jack Tracy said he was fishing with his 5-year-old grandson, Austin Haley, Friday night when he saw the first shot hit the water near where they were standing. As he pulled his grandson to his side, he said, a second shot hit the boy in the head.

That would be a horrible experience! Even if it was an accident.

It's a tragedy when these things happen, but hopefully we can all use it as a reminder. Safety isn't a sometimes thing. Never get complacent. Never assume that there's no one over that way. Know your target and what's behind it.

God be with the family.
