Hi,

My name is Rick. My father recently passed away and left me a small 25 auto pistol. Actually, the gun was registered in my name in 1996 in Missouri. (My father had an issue on his record that kept him from registering it.) Anyway, they let us register it in my name and I left it with him since then. After he passed away this past July, I brought the gun to Tennessee. I was always around guns as I grew up so I know how to use and shoot the gun as well as the safety concerns. I was wondering what I need to do in TN to make sure I am legal to posses the gun and what steps are required to get a permit to carry.

Thanks for your time,

Rick

Rick, unless you have a legal issue that would prohibit you from owning a handgun, you are legal in TN right now. TN has no requirement to register handguns or gun owners.

TN DOES require a permit to carry a handgun in public. The process is pretty simple:

1) Attend and pass a local TN Handgun Carry Permit class or NRA Basic Pistol Class (NRA Basic Pistol covers all TN Permit materials and is a valid substitute for the Carry class if the school is state-certified.) The class will be 8-10 hours (depending on school and if it is Carry Permit or NRA Pistol) and includes classroom lecture, videos, demos, and 40-50 shots on the range.

2) Take certificate of completion to your local DMV office and fill out the paperwork for the handgun carry permit. (Yes, you apply for a carry permit at the same place you apply for a driver's license.) You pay them your money at this point and they take your picture.

3) Go get your fingerprints made. The DMV office gives you a piece of paper with a number to call to find your nearest fingerprint location.

3) A background check is then conducted.

4) Assuming all is kosher between you and the TBI, your permit will arrive in the mail 4-8 weeks later.

5) The place I work at (www.hgrfirearms) is conducting NRA Pistol I/TN Carry Permit 8/17 and/or 8/18. Call Greg at 364-4359 for more info. TGO members get a 10% discount.

Hope this helps. Good luck and PM me if you have any questions!

Thanks for the welcome guys. Since my last post I picked up a Ruger P95 at the Gunshow, and they had a sale at Dicks on 9mm 115g ammo, $8.99 a box. So I got 4 boxes. Also, thanks for the advice Len, I'll be taking my safety course soon to start on getting a carry permit. Thanks everyone. Rick

The P95 is a good gun. Also good price on that ammo. I wish Dick's would hurry up and open here. I was by there last night, and looked like they were stocking the shelves.

Welcome from Memphis. I went through the handgun carry class here back in May. I did it in two evenings of about 4 hours each.

Good luck!

Regards,

Russell
