New "MagPul" Phone Cases

Maybe it was just me, maybe it was a few others along with me, but I always loved the MagPul phone cases and considered them the cream of the crop for drop protections and a "normal" case. Of course there were "better cases" but for "normal use" I absolutely loved them. However, they stopped creating updated models sometime around the iPhone 6 or so.

Today, I just so happened to find "EGO TACTICAL". To me, they look 99.9% just like the MagPul cases, so much so that I wonder if either they were manufacturing the cases for MagPul or if MagPul sold the design to them.

They are available via Amazon, has anyone tried them? Some reviews on Reddit state that they are identical to the MagPul cases, just a different logo.

I'm trying to figure out whether or not to get one right now or upgrade my phone first.

For my money the Magbak classic case is the best phone case ever invented.  Like many things - it excels when you get the whole system squared away.

It's a great case by itself.  The integrated magnets means you can stick your phone to anything ferro-based.  It's surprisingly handy in the gym and in the kitchen.  It ships with tiny magnetic strips that will let you stick it about anywhere - so this works great in the car.

I also use the wallet that's perfect for holding about 3-4 cards and a little cash.

It's a bit more than the generic Amazon case - but I think it's worth it.

How does it compare to Rokform, if you've ever tried that?

It looks like the Magbak keeps Magsafe compatibility. That's good.

It doesn't have the twist lock mechanism - it's much more streamlined with the magnetic attachment it uses.

If I was going to be on a mountain bike or something like that, I might choose something like the Rokform.  But, for day-to-day use, I like how the magnetic strips just blend in.  They're neodymium - so they're super strong.  I have them on the boat, in the car, there's one in my closet, etc.  But the magnets in the case are strong enough that when I bush hogged a couple of weeks ago, I just stuck it to the side of the roll bar.  I bounced around 15 acres of old corn field and it stayed put the whole time.

I had one of the Rokform cases with additional magnet that fit in the twistlock mechanism. I generally loved it but didn't entirely love the fact that I lost wireless charging with it. This was for an iPhone XR so it was a while back.

I decided to bite the bullet and buy the Magbak today for an iPhone 15. I think I'll end up loving it because it should be everything I loved about the Rokform without anything that I hated about it.

I’ve had one for every phone I’ve had since the 7, think.

It works great with MagSafe.  I’d even works with the spotty wireless charger embedded in my desk at work.

The best is the Quadlock MAG case. Me and both my boys use them with the wireless charger on our motorcycles. Retains wireless charging, has the magnet, and the twist lock. I liked the Rockform but they didn't have a wireless charger.

Those do look nice for a super active lifestyle on motorcycles or bicycles. But for me, "Magsafe" compatibility is a very important feature.

I went with Rokform before Quadlock had caught on as much as they have now.
I have a wireless charger for the Rokform but my issue with it is it is not lever locking. I have used their non powered locking mount on a RAM ball on two of my motorcycles for the last three or four years and 50,000+ miles without issue. I do wirelessly charge with the Rokform case on my phone both in my truck and at home also without issue.

When I upgrade my phone and need a new case I may update to a Quadlock just because of the lever lock. I like the look and function of Rokform better but that locking charging base is enough to make me switch since my phone is on my motorcycle handle bar 10,000 to 25,000 miles a year.

@MacGyver

I just gotta say…you definitely called it regarding the Magbak Classic. I’d been seeing ads for months about them but your review definitely caused me to give them a try.

At first I was concerned that the case itself was too slippery but after reading a bit about it online others had said it gets a bit grippier from use. Sure enough, just two days in and it no longer seems slippery.

Excellent case with magnetic strength that surprised even me. It’s night and day different than the Rokform I used to have.

I really wish that they made the same thing for iPads.

I picked one up for my 14 Pro. First thing I noticed was it was absolutely stuck to my wireless charger. I do like that it’s more streamlined than the OtterBox cases I’m used to. Haven’t tried any accessories out just yet but it works the way I need it too right now.
