I just read that parts of NC got over 29" of rain. Unbelievable. We got 5" in Knoxville and it felt like a lot.

That’s well over twice the rain Nashville saw in the 2010 flood. Wow!

The news just reported 30 people unaccounted for in Unicoi County alone.

Spoke to a friend that lives just west of I81, he has no damage. He said all they has was rain. Mother Nature can be so mean at times. Praying for those that have lost so much.

I have a good friend in Jonesborough. They're ok, but will run out of water soon. Their water plant is fed by the Nolichucky and has been shut down, with no expected restart date.

He's a civil engineer and has been out checking structural integrity of the remaining bridges to see if they can be used.

Those rural areas of ETN and WNC will never be the same. There's not enough of an economy for it to recover.

Parts of Washington Co TN got hit hard too.  We live part way up a mountain with the Nolichucky about mile away.  We have no damage but all the bridges across the river are either closed, will need repairs or were washed out.  we are basically on a large island with no way to leave.  The road to Erwin through the mountains is mostly gone and there is a house siting on a part of that is still there.  They are hoping to have one bridge inspected and the road you would take north reopened by early next week but it will be the only way out for awhile. No electric, water, and poor sell service.  Internet via StarLink when we have the generator on and then till a backup battery runs down, our only real connection to the outside world.

We are thankful that we are reasonably prepared with extra food, water, gas and generator but not sure it will last.  The power company can't get much done till they can get across the river with some crews. Rumor is that one crew got trapped on this side and are doing what they can since they can't get off.  A neighbor said there are hundreds of cars parked in lots and along the road waiting to get out that were trapped here when the water rose.

Our main bridge North to Jonesborough is gone, we heard it got hit by house.  Have seen several videos of Erwin with multiple house and barns floating down the river with a few cars and trucks flowing with them.

Sending prayers up for you and yours, Jeb!

Heard from my family in upstate SC.  They're all ok, no flood damage but no power. Trees down everywhere, not likely to get power back for several days.

Here's some perspective on the Nolichucky dam... Typical flow appears to be about 600 cuft/s.  The gauges quit working at 50,000 cuft/s... 100x normal flow. That's a LOT of water.

Another thought... I'd assume none of these people have flood insurance. We don't.

The Govenor's of TN and N C has to make an official request for emergency assistance from the Feds.

That was done yesterday.

This tune points to a different tragedy in a different time and place, but it certainly captures the tone of how some people feel in Helene's aftermath.  I've been humming it for the last few days so I thought I'd share it with no offense in mind.

I got family in Ashville without power right now one without water because they need electricity to pump their well. Luckily one of them is a prepper so they have plenty of water stored as well as some solar panels. Prayers for all involved!

A prepped looks like a lunatic until something like this happens. Then he transforms into a super hero.

Anybody got ideas on how to best help folks affected by this? I’m not giving chit to United Way or The Red Cross. What else do you have?

Samaritans Purse, there was a Baptist group mentioned earlier in this thread.
