Prayers for Western NC and surrounding areas

I grew up in Marshall, NC a small town about 20 minutes north of Asheville. The entire Western NC area is having major flooding with 2 dams failing. Trees have been blown down and power is out in most of the area. The last texts I received from friends said it looked like a war zone over a vast area. 

My hometown has a foot of water from the French Broad River running down main street. 

The Pigeon River has washed part of I40 away and both directions out of Newport are shut down. 

People are stranded, missing, etc. Communications are down in most of the area.

Elizabethton and Carter County are washing away as well. There is only 12 inches of room at the bottom of the Covered Bridge and Doe River hasn't crested. Downtown is a mess, Sycamore Shoals area is inundated and the hospital is being evacuated. All my friends are in a panic or in shock.

Biltmore is under water. They were expecting it to crest 2 feet below the arch over the entrance  road to Biltmore Estate.

Just talked to my brother in Maryville, all OK there. Prays for all effected by the heavy rain and wind.

The pictures are crazy. I40 being washed out is going to be a nightmare. I heard the big Ingles DC in Black Mountain flooded.

I hope any TGO folks in Cocke and Unicoi counties are all safe and can report in at some point.  They’re getting slammed with flooding.

I’ve got people in Keaton Beach and elsewhere in the Big Bend area. We’re expecting a total loss event.

I don't see how some of those coastal cities will remain insurable much longer. I saw one of them has been hit multiple times in the last 3 years. Doesn't seem sustainable for insurance companies.

Yep, Hell-ene only blew the trees and loose debris around for a couple of hours.  We're counting our blessings.  Yet, it's not over for a lot of folks out yonder.

There’s a reason those places haven’t been built up.  They’re basically salt marsh - and they’re used to regular flooding.  Most “houses” are cinder block inside and out.  It’s not uncommon to see furniture up on cinder blocks when people aren’t there.

Places like steinhatchee and cedar key are more built up - but the general architectural style remains roughly the same.

I hate to see what the next couple of days are going to bring when all the damage is fully reported.  Can’t imagine the chaos these people are dealing with.

NC DOT just reported over 300 highways/roads in WNC are completely impassable due to washed out or slides this is not counting ones covered in trees that will have to be cleared before they can check for damage. 

I have family and friends in full panic mode. One friend and his family crawled up a bank and watched their house wash away. Neighbors rescued them. Said it came on so fast didn't have time to do anything.

I think many don’t understand just how devastating an event like this can be in the mountains.

We have friends in. Boone they live high up on the Mountain they said no property damage to their home but are running on generators. Saying power may not be restored for a couple of weeks.  And due to to condition of road can’t get to grocery stores. Praying for them and all involved

Have a co-worker who lives in Florida.  She spent the day enrolling her boys in the school system of the inland home she bought earlier in the year.  Her home in St. Petersburg took an 8ft wave and won't be habitable for a while apparently.  She sent me this Twitter post and said it was a neighbors house on fire in the video

The town of Erwin TN got hit hard. The hospital there asked for folks in boats to help evacuate, and the water rose so fast they had to put people on the roof and get helicoptered out. I believe part of I-26 got washed away there also. In addition to all the houses damaged.
