I open carry all the time. Have for many many years.

Mostly to trigger the anti open carry Karens

I saw 2 guys open carrying over the last couple of months. 1 was at Sams, it was busy and i was not in a hurry so i covertly watched to see how people reacted. Guess what? nothing, no one even looked. No one stared, no one gasp as he walked by, no one went screaming from the store. It was no difference than if he was not carrying at all. Good for him.

So 45 guy what did you expect? Immediate cowering, run out of the store screaming?  Do you know what ran through others mind? Did they shorten their shopping?  No different if I see someone with what I deem to be an offensive T-shirt or other clothing.  It reinforces my thoughts/opinions but it doesn’t change my mind and influences the way I may vote.

Reading this was great entertainment.  As always I don't care how you carry, it's about the person.  Are you responsible, do you train, do you have proper equipment. I see concealed carriers that do it wrong, as well as open carriers.  I shake my head at both.  If you are aware, and you should be I'd bet you can guess who's carrying.  I do both and yes I have a retention holster(level 2) for open carry, id say 85% I conceal carry.  Carry how you want, don't judge those that do it differently then you.  Do I recommend someone have an cheap unreliable firearm no, but if that's what they can afford I get it.  I hate the way my wife shoots, but it works for her and she hits.  Anyone who say their way is the only way, good luck.

Maybe not here, but in CA, NY, MA, CT I bet that would happen-lol.

Actually a buddy used to open carry in CT, more than once when he was in a grocery store someone would call the PD.

OMG someone has a gun! Lets call people that open carry about someone open carrying. That would be funny if it was not so true.

Not surprising from people who would complain to Starbucks that their security guards were armed. You know, the guys hired to protect the people complaining. The irony being all law enforcement except for County Sheriffs are hired security.

15 years ago I worked asset protection for a Walmart in a small town. The manager of the photo department was a busy body who thought everyone was up to something. She calls me in a panic one afternoon and frantically says "help, there's a man with a gun over here". Mind you this was before public mass shootings were as prevalent as they are today, and I lacked the desire of self preservation that I have today. Knowing how the photo manager was, I decided to check things out for myself instead of calling 911 as she wanted me to. I stroll over to her department and low and behold I saw an off duty police officer that I knew. I told him "you aren't going to believe this, but..." He had just gotten off duty and has taken off his uniform shirt and had an Under Armor type shirt on. He apologized and explained that he had pulled his shirt over his gun, but it had ridden up. (He wasn't wearing a duty belt, just a regular OWB holster). I laughed and told him I thought that it was funny. The photo manager called me in disgust because she thought that he was one of my friends and I was allowing him to bring a gun into the store. She quit talking rather quickly when I explained who he was.

I hope no one takes this wrong and I am not trying to be argumentative. But, other than OC being your right and for some wanting to promote fear in the ‘Karens’ I really want to understand and am interested in your reasons for a preference to OC.

I don't know of any top tier trainer that advocates open carry.

To me a trainer stops being top tier when he teaches there is just one right answer for all situations and threats.

I was taught to choose tactics by looking at all relevant factors, such as the mission, enemy, terrain, time available, etc.

For example, when hiking and camping near GSMNP, a bear encounter's more likely than a disarming and mugging, so I open carry then.

Because it's way more comfortable. I also have to take mine out of my holster often while working.

You are right of course. Context is everything in this case.

however I believe both John and Chances were speaking generally, and not in totality

Well it is a forum for discussion. No one has gotten ugly yet. There have been a few reasons brought out here on both sides. I wouldn't consider myself as preferring open carry as I would rather be gray. But I think the best reason was something Col. Jeff Cooper said, "an armed society is a polite society". Though our current society might change his view it makes sense that OC would be a deterrent in most cases. It is more comfortable, and it is obviously quicker out of the holster. I know, there are two sides to everything but there's my two cents on the pros.

I can certainly agree with OC in conjunction with typical outdoor activities, especially in bear country or big cat

In TN, one must still have a permit to carry in any park, OC or not.

Police OC but are still victimized.
