Factory Second Primers ????

Recommended Posts

One of the vendors I sometimes use, American Reloading, is offering factory second primers at what looks like a good price.  They're asking $360 for 5000 LR primers. BUT... they're factory seconds. According to the ad, that means that the primers have less than 0.01% low charge. I'm tempted to order 5K, as I'm doubtful such a small variation will cause much trouble for me, but I wonder what the other reloaders think. The only caveat they offer is that the primers are sub-optimum for very low temps.

That price includes shipping and Hazmat, by the way.

Those second primers are from a relatively new company, White River. At one time the seconds were listed as hard cups, then possibly missing compound, now listed as "Less than .01 % Low Charge"...

I've been very tempted over the past several months to buy some of the small rifle/pistol seconds and use for basic plinking ammo but haven't ordered yet.

Personally for the Large Rifle primers I would pay the extra $3/k for the proven Fiochi primers if I was in need of them (note this requires buying 6k vs 5k). $3/k for me isn't worth the chances of getting a bunch of duds. The price differential is quite a bit different for the other sizes though.

I'm a ammo manufacture never heard of factory second primers due to liability. Squib loads are very bad.

Does anyone have experience with the Servicios y Aventuras or the Unis Ginex primers?

I've been using SA primers (Small pistol) for better than a year now, several thousand in both 9mm Glocks and all manner of S&W and LCR revolvers. .38 spl. .357 and .32 S&W long and .32 H&R mag.

They work great. I've seated them on my Dillon and with my Lee single stage press without problems.

FWIW all of my Smith Revolvers have either standard or Wolff standard powder rib mainsprings. Of course the LCR's set off pretty much anything anyway.

I have a buddy back in Louisiana that has had good experiences with Ginex. I haven't tried them.

I've purchased a fair amount of either pulled or blemished 9mm bullets from American Reloading, but no primers. But I'm tempted to try some Ginex.

American Reloading ships their bullets fast, no extra charge and by FedEx. Good solid company from my experiences.

OH, I would be hesitant about factory seconds. But that's only as long as I can get primers at a semi-reasonable price.

I would never say never,
