Polishing/Smoothing Feed Ramp

I have a little Ruger LCP with a slight imperfection in the feed ramp. It's a vertical *slight* indention towards the right side of the ramp. I believe it is the reason that certain ammo (non rounded points) won't properly chamber into the barrel correctly.

I'm looking at trying to smooth it down enough where it's not a problem. I've read people who do this with a Dremel-like tool, others who prefer to do it by hand.

Any suggestions?

I use a Dremel and jewelers rouge. Any polishing compound should be just fine for polishing the feed ramp.

I do the same thing to all my semi autos. With just a little work you can get a mirror finish.

I use the small buffing wheel. That is the only one I have that sits down in the feed ramp well. It's somewhere around 1/2" or smaller in dia.

Do those felt buffing wheels remove any variations in height on the metal (smooth it down) or will it just polish it to make it look good?

If there is enough damage/distortion to the metal to cause a FTF, you need to blend the ramp. That means you need to do more than polish. If you have a steady hand and a good eye; go for it. I would use some emery cloth with oil to blend out the problem area and then polish it. But I would not use a Dremel tool.

It has a lifetime guarantee. Call Ruger and let them fix it like it should be.

You and your get-rich-quick schemes!

I actually did do just that (email, not phone since it's late), don't know why I didn't think of it sooner.

With any luck, I can ship just my barrel and save on shipping charges!

Now when it comes back, perhaps then I can look at polishing.

Would I want to use a red rouge - for soft metals or a white rouge - for stainless?

Cratex in your dremel works great.

Or you could do it the safest way and use a short piece of dowel for a mandrel, choosing a size that matches the curvature of the ramp, and polish it out with ultra fine wet or dry sandpaper like 600 or finer wrapped around the dowel. And use it with oil to mitigate the abrasiveness. You can work slowly and it would be extremely hard to do any damage. Dremels ruin large numbers of guns every year and should be used as a last resort, IMHO.
