What’s y’all’s thoughts on loading 357 mag ammo with 158 grain JHP bullets? Taper crimp or Lee factory crimp die ? Loading with Accurate #9 and H110

I use, and am very happy with, the Lee Factory Crimp die.

Will it make bullet hold on hotter 357 loads , if the bullet doesn’t have a cannelure?

How many of these bullets ya got? Somebody makes a tool to install a cannelure on a bullet. If I had many of them, I’d probably get one. I like a good, firm crimp on a heavy recoiling revolver round.

I was thinking about ordering 1500 JHP. They are about 7 cents each. May just get some Zero brand, they are double the price but have the cannelure.

I generally stay away from the hotter loads, so I can't say for sure. But the die is infinitely adjustable. I find it works great for taking the bell out of the case, and it would be possible to put a really heavy crimp if that's what you want. At any rate, I've not experienced any difficulty with bullets backing out of loaded cartridges.

If I did get them , I would probably use some on 38spl. to and some lighter load 357 also

The factory crimp die  “should “ kind of make its own cannelure  shouldn’t it?

That's been my experience. I've had to dismantle a few cartridges where the bullet did not have a cannelure. Every one of them had a groove left in it by a good roll crimp.

If the case is completely sized and flared just enough to get the bullet started, and you use a good crimp die; ya should be ok.  The bullet friction to the inside of the case is just as important as the crimp.

I always full length size new cases before loading them...

Another good check is to try to push the bullet into a dummy case after seating.... If it slides in, it will slide out.  Make sure the crimp is heavy.

By the way, H110 has got to have a heavy crimp and bullet pull to burn well.  I've had a hangfire or two with 296 and 110 on heavy loaded 45 Colt Ruger loads in the old days.  I'ma fan of 2400 n a good crimp for the 357...

Good luck
