Ok, so here is a question I have been wondering for some time..I remember growing up seeing trucks drive by with a gun rack inside the cab of the truck and rifles or a shotgun in the rack...but for some time I don't recall seeing them..so what changed that made people quit having long guns in their racks and quit putting long gun racks in entirely? Is there some law that prevents it now that did not prevent it before, or what?

Far as I know, law hasn't changed on that since I was a kid.

It's just that things used to be a lot looser in this country.

Especially IN the country.

Now, they are as likely to be stolen before a LEO might say anything.

Actually, I think things did change about 1984 or 1985. I think there used to be a plain sight law...IE if the firearm was in plain sight. I remember a local rack maker down off nolensville road going out of business. Theft was never a problem. Think about it, anyplace your likely to park is going to be with other pickups also with guns in racks. Thats about the last place a crook wants to get caught.

Theres a gun rack in my ole '66 ford. Interestingly enough it never had doorlocks though, so I don't think i'd dare use it. Tells you how the world has changed, in '66 they didn't even think it necessary to have the means to lock the doors!

A long gun in a window rack would not last 15 minutes in a Walmart parking lot anywhere in the USA today. And locking your doors wouldn't help in the least, just guarantee broken windows. It is insanity to leave anything in the cabin of your truck or car anymore. This is not your Grandpa's America!

I have never had a vehicle broken into in my 33 odd years of driving. The truck I drive now is the only one I have not had a rifle rack in. I honestly can say that when I bought the truck back in 98 I went to Walmart to get one and they did not have any. So I guess I forgot about it. I used them to carry fishing poles. Now both my fishing poles are in my tool box, and both of them have broken tips. I wish I had a rifle rack again.
