Tell me about the Taurus TX22, will a compact that comes with 13 round mags take the 16 rounders?

Yes. Absolutely. I have 3 of each mags. I probably should pick up a few more and when I do it'll be the 16 rounders.

I download each by one round. Probably isn't necessary, but the reliability in mine is pretty remarkable.

I recently put a new RSA in mine as preventative maintenance. I don't deep clean it very often, but keep it well lubricated.

As I've mentioned @jeff43, I couldn't be more pleasantly surprised with mine.

I'm seeing more and more folks shooting them at the ranges I frequent. A fella had a suppressed one at the range (ORSA) just last Saturday. Ran great.

Just to repeat, or mention again. I've found the only ammo it isn't reliable with is Federal Punch. I did have a failure to feed once (maybe twice?) with the Punch, the remainder of the box fed fine. But Caleb Giddings of Taurus warned that due to the flat tip profile of the Punch that would happen.

I have a .22 LCR that's proven incredibly reliable. Since it's a .22 RF the trigger is typically heavy, but very smooth. It LOVES Federal Punch, and 8 rounds of Punch isn't anything to sneeze at. 🙂

Congrats on grabbing the Taurus!

Looking forward to your opinions.

I really need another 22, but I thought I’d try one

Unless I overlooked it I have not seen anybody mention the best .22, a S&W 41.  While not the cheapest 22 out there I have fallen in love with model 41s.

We all need more .22's LOL

@KahrMan

Absolutely agree. 100%.

I am very fortunate that 2 of my regular shooting buddies own them and insist I shoot them when they bring them to the range. 😇

And that means I can afford to purchase a Taurus .22 and a couple of LCR's in various calibers🙂

One thing I learned in the tx22 is making sure the rounds are staggered in the magazine. Otherwise it will missfeed.

Using the supplied Taurus loader makes it easy. Can do it be hand if I don’t rush and make sure each round is staggered

Jamie, oddly enough, mine seems to like the Federal Punch. I’ve ran about a 100 rounds of it through my “full size” TX22 without a hiccup. I’ve also ran Federal Auto Match, Antiqua HV, some old Olin White Box SV and some really nasty Remington Pistol Match. It didn’t like the Remington at all. But it was very nasty.

You know, I might should give them a try again.

The failure to feed I had with Punch was within the first few hundred, probably the first 100, rounds I shot through it (before I even put my Holosun on it.

I have several thousand rounds through it now (lot's of Auto Match as I had a good stash of it). I even went through an old 550 box of Golden Bullets recently.

My little TX Compact loves CCI Stingers, and of course MiniMags.

I'll toss a box of Punch in my range bag and try again. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. 🙂

Congrats @jeff43 ! Hope she runs well for you.

@JustEd makes a good point on loading the magazines (probably the weakest link in the chain from what I read...mine all work great fwiw). I load mine by hand, but pay particular attention to the process. 🤔

Well Heck.

I guess .22's have their idiosyncrasies like most anything can.

I tried another go at the .22 Punch. Did pretty good for around 40 rounds, but had my first failure to eject in my TX 22 Compact/Holosun setup. Kinda knocked my confidence down for that round in this gun. sadly. Guess I'll save it for my LCR.  🤨 LOL

Bulk .22's, Stingers, Minimags etc are GTG, so there's that. 🙂

I’ve only shot Automatch, a few Mini mags ,1 mag of CCI standard.Probably around 200 rounds so far, had about 5 or 6 stoppages.

Pretty accurate, not a MKII but accurate enough.

Thinking of buying a new gun for the first time in a long time.  One option is a .22 LR pistol, which I think will be just fun, and pretty useful in a bunch of situations.  Anyone want to plug their favorite make and model?  M&P22 by S&W, and Walther P22 are my leading contenders, but quite open to the gestalt if different.

One thing to consider, this isn't going to be some heavy use, competition gun, so I don't need top end/top buck.  Some fun and plinking are my main ideas for this gun, figure throw it in the range bag whenever I go shoot something else just to enjoy.

ok you may be leaning towards a handgun, but consider the M&P 22 AR pistol. If you're looking for fun at the range, inexpensive to shoot, inexpensive to buy, reliable, and crazy accurate it's tough to beat. I really enjoy shooting mine for fun, put a can on it and it's super quiet. Shoot one if you get a chance before you buy.

The SIG Trailsides have started to show up in my area.   I don't know if they were clearanced out somewhere, but I've seen several for sale around the $450 mark.  They are great option for not a lot of money.

For something comparable, the Ruger 22/45 MKIV is a great design and can be upgraded with a few key aftermarket parts like the Tandemkross hammer/sear kit and a red dot mount which make it a far more fun pistol to use.

The Kel Tec P17 has the great attraction of being very inexpensive.  Mine has been reliable and I generally like the design and control layout, but accuracy (like every other Kel Tec I've owned) has not been impressive.

Good aside to my search, but I have a GSG 522, so I'm good on a .22 rifle equivalent.  I looked at the M&P option back when buying the GSG and thought it solid, but wanted something different from an AR at the time.  That said, I've noticed the GSG is a little picky about what ammo it will cycle, so I may switch or upgrade someday.  It would likely come down to the M&P and a Ruger 10/22 for that decision.
