.22 LR Pistol Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Posted

Thinking of buying a new gun for the first time in a long time.  One option is a .22 LR pistol, which I think will be just fun, and pretty useful in a bunch of situations.  Anyone want to plug their favorite make and model?  M&P22 by S&W, and Walther P22 are my leading contenders, but quite open to the gestalt if different.

One thing to consider, this isn't going to be some heavy use, competition gun, so I don't need top end/top buck.  Some fun and plinking are my main ideas for this gun, figure throw it in the range bag whenever I go shoot something else just to enjoy.

For fun and plinking uses, I like to Ruger Mark Series. The S&W Victory is pretty good too.

Taurus TX22 is a pretty good gun too, and is a little better as a training aid in my opinion; if that’s something you are looking for

M&P 22 is a great choice; a shooting school where I worked used them to introduce new shooters to live fire.

It's also a great "understudy" gun if you used the M&P 9mm as a carry weapon.

Cheers,

The Ruger Mark guns are neat, but to me their design makes disassembly unreasonably difficult.

If I were buying a .22 just for fun, I might go with a Ruger Charger.

TX-22 was my pick.  Optics ready from the factory on a non-reciprocating mount and a threaded barrel made it an easy decision for me.

I was faced with the same decision recently and went with the TX-22.  It gobbles up even the standard velocity .22 fodder without a hiccup.

Have you heard about the Mark IV?

Hard to beat a S&W Victory.  Not much to look at but once you shoot one you’ll see why they’re so popular.  Mine with a Vortex Venom on top goes to the range every time.  In fact, it stays in the range bag.

If anyone has any MKII’s they are tired of trying to get back together, let me know. I’ll take them.😁

Do you have anything that will accept a 22 conversion kit ? 1911, Kimber, Glock, etc. Cheap way too add a 22 to the range bag

I have a P22 and a Buckmark. No complaints with either. The P22 is a lot lighter, and easier to carry. It likes Minimags.

Hands down, Ruger Mark IV.  More fun to shoot than I could have ever imagined, accurate and a dream to clean.

If you are a Glock fan, there is nothing wrong with a G44. The M&P is a nice one also. I haven't shot the Walther.

Now, if you want to join the cool kids club, get a $&W model 41. Yep, that's a $ on purpose...

+1 for the Walther P22Q. Great little gun, great crispy trigger, and at a great price. Walther is running a promo right now where you get 200(?) rounds of Federal Punch defensive ammo which is about a $50 rebate essentially. I run CCI Minimag and Stingers through mine and haven't had an issue and I'm about 900 rounds in since its last cleaning. Also very easy to conceal if you want to consider it. I recommend the IWB Outlaw Holster for it which sets you back about $35 bucks and I would also recommend to swap out the front sight with a HIVIZ fiber optic sight which is about another $30. Additional magazines would also be a good idea as well as I find 2 to not be enough. I was able to pickup 4 mags direct from Walther for $105. One thing I never noticed until buying more guns later is that the standard issue sights are fantastic and the HIVIZ makes it that much better for target acquisition. My P22 is one of my favorite firearms and I'm certain you will love it as well.

Another nod to the TX22. I have several 22 pistols, including a couple of different Mark series Rugers. The TX gets shot more than all of the others combined.

TX22 is definitely the best bang for your buck, especially since they just released a new model (if you're into red dots on guns).  I also like the Sig P322 (20 and 25 round capacity mags) and the Ruger Mark IV. All are fun, especially suppressed.

Of all the 22 pistols I’ve had my TX22’s are the most fun. Eyeballing the new TORO now. Addictive.

Forget those little plastic toys. Get a Browning Buckmark and actually hit what you aim at. This is a target quality gun at a reasonable price. 😃
