Robbery Suspect Dies from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 21, 2009

The man suspected of robbing several people at the Verizon store on White Bridge Pike Monday is believed to be the same person who committed suicide at a west Nashville home this morning.

Stephen Tidwell, 39, of Westlawn Court, contacted his mother and girlfriend telling them he was under investigation and intended to end his life. They contacted police. Tidwell was discovered dead inside his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

West Precinct detectives developed Tidwell as a suspect last night after he claimed he was the victim of a robbery during which the Ford Explorer he was driving was struck by gunfire. The vehicle matched the description of the getaway SUV used in the Verizon robbery.
In that case, a citizen, who has a handgun permit, opened fire on the suspected getaway vehicle.

A silver Ford Explorer, with three bullet holes in the driver’s side panel, was parked outside Tidwell’s residence.
The TBI will conduct ballistic tests to determine if the shots were fired from the citizen’s weapon.

That does not appear to be a righteous shooting. The guy was leaving, in his vehicle. Unless he was brandishing his gun in the car I don't think the HCP holder or anyone else was in imminent danger of death or serious bodily harm.
