I'm still waiting for cables & brake hose to come in.

I'm going to start ripping into the back end next.

Looks great so far.

Front end looks great.   Whats the plan for the tins?

I'm going to take them off & replace them with aftermarket copies. My original plan was to attack the rear fender with the grinder & repaint them all matt black but they're so clean, I can't bring myself to do it. And I saw how much they sell for as a complete, matching set...😯

There are a couple of sets on ebay right now that're priced at more than half what I paid for the bike! I'm not expecting or wanting that much, but I'm fairly sure I could get 4 figures for them.

I'm also undecided how long to leave the rear fender. Initially I was thinking super short, but now I'm not so sure. It'll be totally slick though. I've already got a side mount tail light & license plate & I'll be making some hidden turn signals that fit in the struts.

I do wish my tanks would hurry up & get here. I want to get them & the fender powdercoated!

If the current tins are in new/showroom condition, you might as well ask top $$ for them, you can come down but not go up.  LOL

I am not a Harley fan at all so hack and spray away!

There is a reason those original parts sell for such good money though. People want to restore wrecked or previously hacked up versions of the bike back to "original" Seldom do modified bikes bring original bike money.

I'm now trying to figure out exactly where & how to chop the rear fender. But I have GOT to get some black on that rear wheel first. The shiny is throwing my eye off.

Projects like this go way better when the builder is older, wiser, and more frugal. Too many young whipper snappers would just go buck wild with the grinder instead of waiting on parts and waste hundreds or thousands of dollars by chopping up high-dollar parts. I have a ton of respect for your restraint, both economically and mentally.

I've looked at one of these more than I'd like to admit.

This is what I had my heart set on too...dead sexy. I just can't bring myself to pay that much. I also considered a Yamaha Bolt or a Kawasaki Vulcan S, since both come in blacked-out versions and look nice too.

A man can walk into any Harley dealer and buy the latest and greatest gas grill edition. He’s mutilating a classic here!

I thought the same thing first time a saw a quad-rail and a red dot on a lever action rifle.

This project, on the other hand, reminds me of the immortal words of Oscar Goldman: "We can rebuild him it. We have the technology. We can make him it better than he it was. Better, stronger, faster."

Hardly a classic.   If it was pre-evo, I MIGHT agree with you.  But they made tons of these  and he hasn't done anything that isn't reversible.   The original tins are safe and stuff can be re-chro*gag noise*....re-chro*gag noise*.....re-shinied if the black out look isn't for the next owner or Rob down the line develops bad taste.

Face it. We’re old. Evos are classics now, and beginning to command the prices to prove it.

LOl think about it

Last EVO was 1999? I know some Twin-cams came out then.

That was 35 years ago

EVO's were '84-'99. Had a '91 Softail with one and wish I'd kept it. Following and enjoying the thread but I'm old and an unapologetic chrome fan. Been riding Harleys for 40 years but love them enough to know that even blacked out bikes matter. Look forward to seeing the final product.
