wanted WTB 1973 license plate for jeep

Picked up a 73 CJ5 recently. Wife has decided it requires a vintage plate. If anybody has one (does it have to be truck?) I'm interested. Cash, ammo, MAC/DeWalt tools, seller's choice.

No idea what the plate would be worth, I'm at your mercy.

If you want to go by the "rules" , you'll have to refer to the TN gov website to figure out which year plate you need if you're going to use it for a substitute for an antique plate. It's sorta of a convoluted mess. On the other hand police officers don't really spend much time checking antique car plates.

In my county sumner, I put a 70 tag on my 70, a 72 tag on my Blazer and 72 tag on my 71. She said if not registered they can use it.

I have a 1952 TN Maury Co pickup truck plate on my Studebaker. I told them I wanted to use the plate on the truck. They never said a word, just clicked on the computer and gave me the paperwork.

Well, no longer searching, but the stories are cool so not gonna ask for the thread to be closed. Wife (proud Owner) decided to go antique I had actually found a 73 tag with minimal sear Hong, good thing I didn't pull the proverbial trigger.

Nice thing about antique is it’s one-and-done…no annual renewals or wheel tax. Maybe old plates are the same?

I have absolutely no earthly idea what I was trying to say. Only thing I can think of is that I did find it online, was trying to say that, but was typing so fast and inattentively that autocorrect made my gibberish into word salad

You have to be careful with the antique auto tags you get at the dmv.  The ones with no annual registration fees.  They are only allowed for use on the weekends, car shows, and taking it to the shop.  Not sure how well that's enforced, but I was reading online if you violate it you have to pay full registration fees and banned from getting them for 5 yrs or something like that.  My 1999 Silverado is qualified for them, but I know occasionally I would drive on a weekday.  I dont think this includes these vintage tags registered to classic cars though... I think they have yearly renewals.

I wanted to put a 64 tag on my 64 wagon. I had the tag, they told me there was no such thing as a tag with 64 on it. Told me it was probably a reproduction plate and I couldn't use it. Took it in and showed them, they still said there was no plate ever issued in 64.

My car has been running with a 64 plate now for about 4 years.

I have been told but have not checked it out that if you carry the antique plate in your car you can run with year of manufacture plate without registering the plate.  I was told by the same person that it can be from any state as long as the year matches the car.  He runs Texas plates on a couple of his cars that he bought in Texas and has never been stoped.

I found a place that makes the reproduction plates, even the earlier TN shaped ones and I run them on the fronts of my old cars.  One of my old trucks that isn't back on the road yet has Ohio truck plates on it, that is where I bought it and real 1947 TN plates are very expensive, I plan to try it with the antique plates in the cab.

I do run regular plates on my 1950 truck because I want to drive when I want to and where I want.  I draw a lot of attention when I pick up a load at Lowe's.  It has one of the repo plates on the front.
