Lever Action .30-30

Not sure why, but I'm kind of itching for a lever action .30-30.

Naturally my first inclination was towards the Winchester 94, but I came across the Mossberg 464 while doing a little googling.

Has anyone here had any experience w/ the 464?

They're really slick looking lever guns:

I bought a Marlin 336 and have found it to be a really fun gun to reload for. I shoot cast bullets in it and it only costs a few cents per shot.

Hard to beat a 30-30.

Just found this comment on the Mossy,

Reports from Mossberg 464 owners have not been good, broken extractors, barrel band screws and feeding issues seem to be the major gripes.

If you really want a great lever rifle. The Marlin 336 is the best of the rest! I have a Marlin 30AW, same as the 336. Different wood. I bought mine at Wal Mart back in 1988. It still looks new. Have shot a lot of ammo through it. I reload for it too. Marlin 336 is easy to mount a scope on to. gearyr

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll probably steer away from the Mossy and towards the Marlin. :)

The marlin 336 is the best deal going, in my opinion, on a lever gun. You can pick them up around $200 if you look hard enough, $250 isn't uncommon. Two of my friends have 336's that I found them (one pre-64 (no external safety) the other post 64). I have a revelation myself, which was basically a 336 made for western auto by marlin as a store brand. All three are great shooters, and cost far less than the competition!

I like my win model 94, dialed it in 2" at 100 yds with a cheap scope. I had originally bought it for my Dad. He gave it back when he passed away in 1998.

They are fun guns. I have a Winchester 94 30-30 that I got 30 something years ago. It has always been a good shooter.

If you can find a Pre '64 winchester 94, I vote for it, otherwise go with the Marlin.

I have a post-64 94. To me its 6 of one half dozen of the other.

From what I've been told, the winchester has a smoother action. The trouble is that it ejects the spent shells into your face, and that it doesn't have space for a top rail mount, if you want any kind of optics. I bought a marlin, and it's instinctive to point it. I shot through a target with remington corelokt bullets from walmart once and cut down a 2.5 inch tree.

I like the model 94 myself. I have an old one that my father gave me. Not really worried about mounting optics on it. Kind of kills the point of having a fast handling brush gun. If you want optics go with the Marlin. If you want a quick handling,point-aim-shoot gun, go with the winchester. All depends on what is more useful for you shooting style. That being said they are both great guns.

My old roommate has a Marlin 30AW. It's a very nice shooting rifle. I highly recommend the 336.

As an aside, whenever I would shoot his, I would always think of the Duke in one of his Western's going against the bad guys.

Had the Marlin 336 in the 35cal, call me a dumb butt, sold it in the mid 1980's. Could kick myself a thousand times for selling it. Sweet gun.

Bought my wife a Henry Golden Boy chambered in 22 magnum for her birthday...she loves it. Henry has a very NICE 30-30 too.
