does your carry permit have to be on you at all times

changed address (moved 2 miles). I went in for renewal. they confiscated my current HCP (very unhappy about that) which did not expire for another year. the waiting began. so far 3 months and counting.

have the piece of paper, but am a little anxious to get the actual HCP. Went in to request duplicates and they said no dice, as noted above, need current passport, etc and fill out additional paper and submit for long wait.

just my experience so far...

I'm a bit confused.

If your current HCP did not expire for a year, you can not renew. It has to be within 6 months of expiration.

If you were simply doing a change of address that could be done online and simply print the page at then end with your new address on it. Not sure what would happen if you went in to do a change of address, but not sure why they would take your current HCP since you can not carry legally without it.

The receipt they give when you renew is only valid with your expired HCP still in your possession. So if you don't have that, you are not technically legal.

If you went back to get a duplicate, (meaning you already turned in a renewal) they should have already had proof of your citizenship on file from the time of renewal. I was told when they copied my birth certificate that I would not have to show it again (for that purpose at least).

When my wife got her name changed after we got married they confiscated her permit as well and just gave her the yellow paper. Hmmm interesting.

DANG!

Well, don't guess my name will ever change, but you can now bet that if I move, I'll notify them online and not in person!

You don't even have to get a revised permit for address change, just notify.

Of course wouldn't be the first time I've heard of the people at the DL station doing something wrong either........

No surely you're mistaken. Not those purveyors of the code. Those soldiers of the highway law. Those knights of secretarial splendor and glory.

Just changed my address at the local dmv. They gave me my permit back and said keep my reciept and a copy of what was changed with it. Until my new one arrives in 3 to 6 weeks.

Sounds like the way it should be done.

Maybe the DL members are closer to the people in the comedy series Reno 911.

It's not always funny....but laughing at it pretty good tonight....

Why I have 4. They are only $5 for a duplicate. One in wallet, one in glove box of my car, one in glove box of wife's car and one that I drop in the pants pocket when I don't carry my wallet.

So today I was working with a good friend of mine. My friend (along with another one of his buddies) just took the HCP class 2 weeks ago, and paper work processed a few days later. Now my friend told me that his buddy talked to a LEO (who he knows personally) and they ran his DL # and it came back as showing he was a HCP holder. Obviously processed on states end even though his card has not came in yet. My buddy said that his buddy was told per the LEO that he could start carrying (AND SUPPOSEDLY STARTED YESTERDAY!!!) since it was in the computer!! NOW FIRST LET ME SAY THAT I CALL BULL ON THAT STORY, at least from the dudes end who said he talked to a LEO friend of his...and this is NOT WHAT I WAS TOLD. you must always have your card on you if carrying. I hope that dude gets busted and learns his lesson. stupid if you ask me....

I think basically what is going on is "as far as that LEO is concerned" the guy could carry. But that doesn't mean ever LEO in the state may feel that way, because the law clearly says you must have your HCP in your possession.

I agree 100 percent with Fallguy and also that part of the law should have been covered in Detail in the HCP class. DO NOT carry until you get the card back in the mail.

A few pages back I believe someone copied the exact law.

I believe since I was a member on this board someone started carrying a few days early and got checked by a LEO and ended up having to go to Court. Do not know how that turned out.

Fact, yes, it matches your DL Number. Fact the law states you must carry it when you go armed. Otherwise, one must separate the firearm and ammo, example trunk and passenger area of the car.

We have seen other examples where a person got out and noticed they forgot their wallet at home and to be legal they separated their firearm and ammo asap.

I called a few weeks ago and requested a duplicate application because a few times Ive left and forgotten my wallet. Turned right around and got it, not taking a chance. But now since they one guy got his revoked by mistake and then hearing some people are getting theirs taken when renewing, I think Ill just wait. I dont understand why they would confiscate your valid one when applying for a renewal at some stations and not others. Or do they ALWAYS confiscate it on renewal? Seems backwards to take one that is valid and make you use the receipt for your permit.

They are not supposed to take your HCP when renewing....in fact it is your reciept that you renewed AND your old HCP that allow you to carry until the new one comes in, not just one or the other. I think some of the confusion comes with the difference between DLs and HCPs and some employees not knowing the different laws/rules.

This was more of a problem when the process was new, but I didn't think it happend that much anymore.

I am going to go out on a limb here

It comes down to us needing to know the Law about carrying and we now need to know the rules about what to expect at the DMV to make sure they follow proper procedures and if not question it. We have heard stories about some DMV's not understanding that is it legal to have dup HCP because the don't understand a Dup HCP is legal because it is not legal to have a dup DL.

Im glad you pointed that out. I have heard several people saying that you could carry with the receipt from renewing, but it does clearly state that you cant carry with just the receipt if your HCP has expired. Another good reason to make sure and renew as soon as you are able to. Thanks

Well, sort of. As long as you renewed before permit expired, your receipt and an expired permit are good until new one comes in. You could have done it just the day before it expired, for example, but you could still carry.

If you renewed after permit expired, you're right, no carry till new permit arrives.
