Another kick-ass class!

5 participants translates into much one-on-one critique & correction & time for Q&A.

Classroom:While Todd will never be confused with Winston Churchill as far as his public speaking skills he is very good at holding his listeners' attention & communicating his knowledge. He & Dustin must be Penn & Teller fans with Todd as Penn.Overheads are good:clean, sharp & large enough to see.Particular praise should be given to CIS's emphasis on mindset:a sadly overlooked area in many schools.

Range Time:The 4 hours on Saturday were spent practicing basic skills at a relatively slow pace:the idea being to get the basic moves down correctly before complicating things. It should be noted that while the emphasis Saturday was on basics this is NOT traditional target shooting.Draw stroke, sight picture, trigger control & reloading were emphasized.

Sunday the real fun starts as Todd & Dustin start adding things to the pot.Malfunction drills, multiple reloads, kneeling, prone & supine position shooting, multiple targets (LOVE the new number-color-shape targets & drill!),shooting on the move & some minor competition increases the stress level. It should be noted here that the emphasis is not on speed for speed's sake but on learning the skills, getting the moves right & fighting throught problems ("Keep going! Make it work! Think it through!").

As always this class is a test of equipment as well as a learning experience.I found that the Vickers Extended mag release for Glocks rocks & the Don Hume 721OT holster is a LOT easier to draw from than the Serpa or Bianchi Carrylok (both good holsters with active retention features).More comfortable to me too.I discovered that 2+ floorplates on Glock mags might not be the best idea:I had one mag come apart when I dumped it strewing cartridges & mag parts over the range.Disconcerting to say the least!

As I've said in the past any CIS class is time & money well spent. The fact that of the 5 participants 2 were repeaters,1 is an active officer & 1 has had fairly extensive international training should speak for the esteem Todd & Dustin are held in.

Looks like a lot of fun while learning, as always! You guys should have an alumni weekend sometime. Any excuse to come out there and do some dynamic drills is a good excuse.
