How can I ship ammunition to Nevada?

Recommended Posts

I've done some searching online and get conflicting answers...

I am headed to Front Sight in Las Vegas next weekend and need to ship .40 handgun ammunition there.

Anybody know the rules on shipping ammo? I know the box has to be marked ORM-D cartridges small arms - I saved the boxes/labels from when I received my last ammunition shipment.

Some sites say it is considered a "dangerous good", some say just the ORM-D cartridges small arms label is good enough. I call a FedEx store and the dude there said they couldn't take it and that the hub probably wouldn't either... I called gun store and they said I could ship it myself with the label...

Can anyone with experience here please enlighten me?

Ammo will have to be shipped via FedEx ground or UPS ground. Packed in a sturdy box with ORM-D labels. That is really all there is to it.

FYI: Don't call the UPS/FedEx store people, they cannot accept firearms/ammo shipments, and they really don't know the rules anyway. You will have to take the ammo to one of the FedEx/UPS hub facilities.

So, I can just make sure the ORM-D labels are secured and ship like any other package? No "Hazardous/Dangerous Goods" forms?

I am not aware of any special forms that need to be filled out. Ammo is classified as ORM-D, and should not require any hazardous materials shipping papers. Like I said, go to a UPS or FedEx hub for shipping. Don't use (or ask for advice) from the UPS Store or FedEx Kinko's people. They don't really know the regulations, especially when dealing with firearms/ammo.

Looks like I will be headed out that way in June. I thought about shipping the ammo but probably will opt for getting ammo there from the local WallyWorld or just bringing it. The airline folks advised me that I could ship in my baggage up to 11 lbs and by my scale that will cover 300 rds of 9mm. My experience flying out of Nashville is that TSA isn't the problem, it was the airline desk help. The ammo has to be in the right container including the box of purchase or something designed to carry ammo....not a ziplock baggie. And shipping out the handgunS is by the book...just as it's written. Allow plenty of time at check in and if you get an incompetent nitwit at the desk, just ask for the supervisior. Just do it as it is written. ( Bring a copy of the policy copied from the airline site) . Just make sure the airline will allow the firearms and ammo. I know some airlines dont...and I think Allegiant is one of them. Have fun and let us know how the course went.

Thanks for the responses.

I spoke with Fed Ex's dangerous goods people. They said all that was required for this ammo was the ORM-D labeling and that I couldn't take it to a drop off retail location. Had to be on an existing account and I ended up dropping it off at the Nashville main Fed Ex place. No other form was required, or so I was told on the phone, so that's what I told the counter worker.

Also, has to ship ground. Air shipping requires hazmat certification.

I'll chime back in after the course... Here's hoping the ammo arrives on time. I wasn't expecting to have to ground ship.

If you ever need to ship ammo again you canuse UPS and call for a pickup, I have shipped ammo that way because the UPS hub is 40 miles one way from me.
