Montana Gold bullets (.40 S&W)

Just wondering if anybody uses MG bullets? From what I understand they are popular with USPSA shooters, which we're thinking about getting into at some point in the future.

I got about 375 rounds from my friend to try. (.40 S&W 180g FMJ.) Liked them so I order a 2500 rnd case for myself and son.

I didn't really think about it until I showed the bullet to another friend. He said the jacket looked like brass and not copper. I sent an email to MG to inquire, and they confirmed they are brass.

This is a new one on me. I just thought they would be a copper jacket. I don't have the details but I know brass is harder than copper so I'm wondering about increased barrel wear.

So, does anyone have any opinon on this?

Meh... I wouldn't worry about increased wear. Ever shoot Remington Golden Sabres? Brass jacketed. I shot over 5,000 rounds of the stuff in my Sigma .40 when I had it with no ill effects. (the un-bonded sabres were about as cheap as any other jacketed component a few years ago... plus they looked cool. But... the jackets nearly ALWAYS separated. Not a big deal when shooting bowling pins and old computers, though.)

Blast away, my friend!

Thanks for the feedback.

That then I got me to thinking about the brass vs. copper and how "hot" they might be loaded.

Right now we've been using 3.8g of VV N320 which works out to a 135 PF in my son's pistol. More than enough cushion against the 125 PF min. for Minor. (Since we're looking at the Production class you don't get extra credit for shooting Major.)

I'm assuming the lower the load would help as well to cut down on the wear. Correct??

Wear from the load is not the same in a pistol as with a rifle, pistol ammo is not overbore like many rifle loads. Overbore is where the throat wear comes from. Unless your shooting 30-50K a year.. I wouldn't worry about it.

MG's are good to go . I shoot'em in 9mm for USPSA Production and IDPA. Several top 10 shooters use them. Buy'em while you can, they usually are not in stock.

I have shot a few thousand of them in 45 ACP with no problems.
